The Company having learned with sorrow that packs of cards have crept in among us, and seeing the misfortunes that this sort of game brings upon fami- lies, the loss of time for those who occupy themselves with them, the divisions and disputes which they engender, the blasphemies which accompany them, the trickeries which they produce, and above all taking into consideration that our Religion has always prohibited them, the Company declares to all those who practice such games that they will be cited to appear before the Consistory and severely censured for the first offense, proposing more severe penalties for the scandalous ones who continue to play. In this cause it is decided that immediately after the reading of this present act, there shall be read publicly that part of the discipline which touches this subject, so that these two strokes falling at the same time will make more impression. Carré to write to Rodeiland to Seicouq, Providence &C. not to receive any more beggars if they have not a certificate from the minister and the elders to attest their poverty. Mr. Carré our minister having demonstrated to us again that the irregularity of the church lands makes them useless, as their want of breadth prevents their being occupied, and having made us see by the terms of an agreement with Mr. pierre Berton that these irregularities can be remedied by the junction of the grounds, wehaveconsented that the said Messrs. Carré and Berton accommodate themselves in accordance with the act that they have made between them, which for this purpose shall be written out and signed by our hand in testimony of our approval. We the undersigned seeing that the narrowness of. our lots make them not only malformed, but nearly useless, and wishing to remedy the irregularity by mutual concessions, we have agreed upon the following articles -first-that the same extent of our lots shall be kept, there will only be the shape changed in such manner that in place of their being narrow and long,

they will be double as wide as they are-secondly-(in order to accomplish this end) instead of our said lots being divided in length from north to south, by a direct line, they will be thrown together, and this line will be destroyed, in order to make another which will divide them in two, from east to west. thirdly that it is this line from east to west which will make after this the sep- aration of our lots, and in order that all shall be for the convenience as much of us as for others who may in the future do the same, we leave between us a cart road of the width of two rods which will extend and come out onto the high road of the temple. fourthly so that the church lot will be situated on the high road from grenich in full view as it was before, with this difference only that it is more towards the south, and instead of the length being from the little river to the meadow, this length will be cut in two, and made wider so that the lot will be larger and more regular. Fifthly, following this procedure instead of the grounds of the church being only twenty rods in width and one hundred and sixty in length, they will have forty or thereabouts in width and eighty in length-sixthly-it only now remains in regard to the situation of the temple on this lot. It is determined that it shall remain in the same place, and the cemetery near it, being one half acre in extent which Mr. Berton gives to be ground for the church in perpetuity, so that neither he nor his shall ever be able to reclaim it. All of which is agreed and concluded according to the good pleasure of the Consistory. made at frenchtoon at a meeting of the Con- sistory, the 22nd January one thousand six hundred and eighty eight.

be given back to the church which has only furnished the frame of the large . room, 700 planks and 2000 shingles-and that Mr. Carré did all the rest at his own expense ;- on which the company judged it right to draw up this present act, to serve as a restriction on the undertaking, so that if it becomes necessary to make restitution it would take in only the things advanced by the church, and nothing further. Having heard the report of the witnesses who were present at the quarrel of the widows Arnaut and perlier we have judged the widow perlier deserving of very great censure, without however approving altogether of the behavior of the widows gallais and Arnaut, this is why they shall all be cited for next Friday after the sermon and in case they refuse to appear, Mr. bonyot will refuse to them the communion ticket for sunday and will cite them for sunday week, the first day of April. The consistory and several of us the Heads of family who truly love their re- ligion desire with all their hearts to make here an establishment for the public exercise of piety but as they see that the thing is extremely difficult, by reason of the ingratitude and obstinacy of several who refuse to pay the tax of the minister, wishing to remedy this disorder and make a distinction between the pious and those others, we, the minister and the elders of this church, after the invocation of the holy name of God, declare that those persons who refuse to pay their tax through obstinacy or through ingratitude, will be deprived of the holy communion, as unworthy of this sacrament of piety and of charity as it is thus that they extinguish if they can the torch of the word of God in these lands -besides which, in case they should wish to contract marriage the nuptual benediction will be refused them and they will not be received to present their

children in baptism until they have first done their duty. That if these people will not return because of these punishments, we consider them unworthy of the name of Christian Protestant, and after having tolerated them in this con- dition for the space of one year in our assemblies and having exhorted them every quarter to do their duty-if they refuse, they will be deprived of entrance into our temples as persons who are not of our communion. It is thus that we will bring back among us the pious security of the ancient church, that we will throw out of our bosom these dissolute and scandalous persons whose smallest fault is to refuse to pay the minister-our communion will then become more pure and consequently more agreeable to God. But in order that people may not think that there is some injustice or some want of charity in this resolution, we declare that we only condemn here ill will and rebellion, protesting that we have consideration for those who are unable to pay the said tax which will be examined into and judged by the consistory when they find those who com- plain, and in order that every one may know it, the present act shall be read next sunday after the service. Mr. Bonyot having asked of this company the liberty to set up a private bench for his family in our temple, we have granted it to him on the condition that he pay an annual rent for the said location, and we have decided to grant the same privilege to those who will ask for it under the same conditions, and in order that it shall be seen that no particular interest is mixed in this determination, we prefer that the said rents be employed in the repairs of the temple and in no other way. Done in the french temple of naragansett this 10th of August of the year 1688.

Today the eighth day of the month of July one thousand six hundred and eighty eight Mr. menardeau and david Surrel having appeared voluntarily before this company in regard to certain interests which had been mixed up between them, the company arranged it for them, for which they appeared grateful. On the said day Mr. Ater Masson having asked for the place which is at the right hand on entering our temple from the door up to the [ -? ], the company granted it to him on condition of his paying three shelins annual rent, on which he had paid one shelin for four months in advance, which will be employed in the upkeep of the temple.

Today 21st October 1688, God having established in this realm three french protestant churches they have all three resolved to keep up between them a close communion both by the exercise of the same discipline and by the con- vocation of the same conference or Synod.
This is why we have agreed with the church of boston and that of nipmoc4, as they have also agreed with us, no longer to receive at communion any mem- ber of the other churches without a certificate from the minister and the elders of the place where they made profession of religion, until more exact measures

On the said day Monsieur Carré, our minister, having reported to us that a few days ago after the sermon in the temple of boston the consistory of that place, assembled with its minister, that of nipmoc and that of this church, it was pro- posed in the meeting that a conference be held next year, according to the usual manner of our protestant churches in france, on which they all came to an unanimous agreement having left the determination of the time when it should be convoked to the decision of the particular churches. This is why we decide the 15th of May is the best time for the convocation of the said conference- we will submit however to whatever the plurality of voices orders. Today the sixth of the month of January 1689 Mr. Pierre bonyot having asked to be discharged of the receivership of the ministry, the company granted him his wish, giving him a statement of his receipts and of the work which has been done during the time that he exercised his charge, and have put in his place Mr. pierre berton to continue if it pleases the Lord during the present year 1689 and longer if it is necessary, the Company to determine that according to the act of the 29th of April 1688. He will refuse the communion tickets to all who will not pay their tax unless he wishes to render himself personally responsible. In testimony of which we have all signed. Carré, minister. P. Today, above given, the consistory seeing that an abuse which is against our discipline is creeping into this flock, which is that the fathers are renouncing the custom of godmothers and godfathers which is accepted in france, and imitate it by themselves presenting their children in baptism, and wishing to remedy this we judge it necessary to exhort fathers and mothers not to stiffen them- selves against the usage practiced in france and for this purpose the act of dis- cipline which touches on this subject will be read publicly sunday next after the sermon so as to prevent that this thing happens again. Done at a meeting of the consistory after the prayers.

This company having been informed of the scandal that Isaac Girard and the widow Arnaut gave to this church last week it declares them both unworthy to receive the communion in suspending the said girard for having made public a matter, which true or false, shame should have made him keep in silence, and the widow arnaut is also suspended from the communion not so much for the accusation of the said girard which we cannot confirm or confute, as for the shameless liberties which she cannot deny having taken with the said girard, and because the scandal is public, the said suspensions should be also public, and they should not be lifted from them until they have first testified to their repentance and satisfied this company.
