Elder John Gorton's Marriages.

The following list of marriages (281 in number) cover a period from Jan. I, 1754, to May 4, 1792. The list here published is substantially the same as that printed in the "Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner" during the summer and autumn of 1879. Elder Gorton was pastor for many years of the Warwick and East Greenwich Baptist Church and is buried in the old churchyard there. His tombstone records the fact that he died June 6, 1792, in his zoth year and that he was 39 years and 9 months an ordained minister of the Gospel, of the Baptist Church, of East Greenwich. He lived in a gambrel roof house now standing and located near the East Greenwich line on the main road from Apponaug to Greenwich. He is supposed, though we think erroneously, to have been in his day the only Elder in the town. At the time this list was first published in the "Gleaner" the original book of the Elder s from which these marriages were transcribed was in the possession of Mr. Henry W. Greene. Part of the leaves are of the old Stamp Paper pattern of the times. The book is bound in sheep skin, has a brazen clasp and the manuscript is in the Elder's own writing. The great value of this contribution at the present time is apparent at a glance.
