PREFACE.

In presenting to the Citizens of Anderson the initial volume of the Directory, we desire to extend our thanks for the splendid manner in which our efforts have been received, enabling us to produce this volume, which will be found both useful and necessary.

In its preparation neither pains or expense have been spared to make it complete, and we claim without fear or favor, that it is at least equal to any Directory publication in the world. In this as well as all other of our publications we used the services of trained directory men, and the in- formation is dependable.

Embraced in this volume we give five complete city departments, as well as a Business and Professional Department of the county, and the names and P. O. address of the tax paying Farmers, and within the con- fines of territory embraced in the City Department there are 11,711 inhab- itants.

Immediately following the delivery, we will send one copy of the Anderson Directory to each of our exchanges, which covers the principal cities of this country as far west as Detroit, Mich., which will do consid- erable towards advertising Anderson away from home, and the very fact of Anderson supporting a complete duplex Directory such as this volume is, cannot but attract the favorable attention of Directory users in general throughout the country.

There is no better way that the advantages of a city can be exhibited to the outside world than through the pages of its local Directory. Here is recorded evidence that cannot be contradicted, as the different departments of the Directory exhibit the business pursuits of every character which is corroborated by the classified list of the inhabitants, its Institutions, etc. Outside of the necessity of the Directory for Business purposes, this fea- ture alone should appeal to every resident alike and enlist their co-opera- tion and support, thereby contributing their share to the labors of the Publisher.

Before closing, we desire to call the attention of the outside world to Anderson, its growth and development. The city has taken up the paving question and the central portion of the city is paved with vitrified brick and additional paving will be continued each year. Anderson has a thoroughly equipped electric Street Railway, modern in every particular, which covers all sections of the city and extends into the suburbs, connecting the mills with the city. The population of Anderson has doubled since the Federal census of 1900, and it is continually growing, it being `necessary to add names to our work every day of new parties coming in during the course of compilation.

The census taken by us is in our opinion as near correct as mortal man could produce. It is not an ESTIMATE but actual figures taken un- der oath by men trained for just such work and with years of practical experience: men who are more likely to understand the way to secure the necessary statistics, and probably better equipped to produce reliable re- turns, than the unskilled and uninitiated enumerator would be. At any rate, our reputation, covering nearly thirty years of Directory and Census Work, backs these figures.

In conclusion, we desire to extend our thanks for the many courte- sies shown the representatives of this work in the gathering of statistics necessary and to the Business Men of Anderson for their liberal support, making the work possible, promising to continue to render the very best service, and an improvement with each issue.

Respectfully, THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO.,

Anderson, S. C., April Ist, 1905.

W. H. WALSH, Mgr. Anderson, S. C., March 4th, 1905.

Personally appeared before me, R. Y. H. Nance, Judge of Probate for Anderson County, W. H. Walsh, E. I. Grady, R. C. Livingston and W. B. Ryan, who being duly sworn, say that they have been actively connected with the enumeration of the Census of Anderson, and that no one other than they had any connection with the work, and that the returns (11,7II) are actual figures, and absolutely correct to the best of their knowledge and belief.

(Signed) W. H. WALSH, E. I. GRADY, R. C. LIVINGSTON, W. B. RYAN.

Attest. R. Y. H. NANCE, Judge of Probate. [Seal.]
