PREFACE
-
NEWBERRY, S. C.
Newberry, S. C., is enjoying the possibility of unusual development. .A bond issue of $190,000 has been authorized for paving, lighting and ex- tension of water and sewerage lines. The county, moreover, has voted bonds to the amount of $400,000 for building three roads across the county, inter- secting at Newberry.
During the past two years a great deal of building has been done. The Exchange Bank put up a five story, fire proof building, containing forty-four splendid, modern office rooms in addition to the Bank. To make space for this "sky scraper" four one-story buildings were wrecked. Five - new garages have been completed in this period, for handling the Ford, Brock-Morgan, Franklin, Holt and Studebaker cars. The Studebaker build- ing is two stories in height, of reinforced concrete veneered with brick. It has a frontage of 75 feet, and extends through the block. There is not a more up-to-date garage in the state than this one is. The Newberry Hotel has been remodeled at an expense of $60,000, making it the best to be found in South Carolina in a town the size of Newberry. . An up-to-date Sanitary Laundry has been installed in a new building, a large brick sale barn has been erected, and a splendid Bake-Rite bakery has begun operation. During the past summer Newberry College remodeled an old building into a splendid boarding hall and dormitory. Other new buildings are those erected by the Lime-Cola and Coca-Cola Bottling Companies.
In February, 1921, a cash and carry grocery store, operated on the self service plan, was opened by a local jobbing house.
Numerous citizens are taking advantage of the reduced prices of building materials, and are beginning to erect dwelling houses.
In a civic capacity, Newberry has organized a Chamber of Commerce, ¿ Building and Loan Association, an American Legion Post, a Rotary Club ond a Kiwanis Club within a ycar.
The three banks of Newberry have resources of $5,500,000, and on December 31st, 1920, the total deposits were $3,082,777.27.
Newberry has three large cotton mills, a weekly industrial pay roll of $30,000, ttwo railroads, good connection with a third railroad near by, a low electric power rate, and plenty of good water. The churches, schools, stores and people are of high order.
Th population is approximately 9,000.
NEWBERRY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE,
Lloyd W. Maxwell, Secretary.
April, 1921.
