Population Union (city including suburbs) 9,455; five large cotton mills, two big hosiery mills, cotton oil mill, ginnery and ice factory- combined capital $7,470,000; employ 3,259 persons; annual pay roll $2,750,000.
Two railroads-Southern, main line between Cincinnati and Jackson- ville, Florida. Seaboard Air Line-Washington to Atlanta, by connec- tion with U. & G. S. R. R. On Appalachian Highway.
City owns Electric, Water Works and Sewerage Systems worth $236,- 022.26, has 23 miles cement pavements, and 5 miles macadamized streets. Public recreation grounds of 8 acres, with splendid ball ground and swimming pool; 80 hp. fire motor truck and modern alarm system; finest "White Way " in state.
Nine graded public schools, five free night schools, including Buffalo, total enrollment 3,015.
Five banks. Two newspapers.
Modern, fireproof hotel will be erected in 1920. $65,000 hospital.
Thirteen churches valued at $88,000.
$75,000 Court House; $65,000 Postoffice; $10,000 Carnegie Library; $10,000 City Hall and Fire Department.
Live Chamber of Commerce with large membership and active, paid trained secretary, a County Farm Demonstration Agent, city and county health officer, two Home Demonstration workers, and a Red Cross Home Service Worker.
Facts About Union County
Population 1920-35,500; assessed valuation of property $8,620,000; big cotton mills at Lockhart, Jonesville and Buffalo; electric power lines at Neal Shoals; electric power lines and telephone lines traverse entire county. Several noted medicinal springs. Delightful climate. $1,175,000 worth of bonds voted for building good roads.
Produces cotton (average annual yield 20,000 bales), corn, hay, grains, fruits and vegetables. Specially adapted to raising cattle, horses, mules, swine, sheep, goats and poultry.
$475,000 is being spent building permanent improved highways iu Union county in 1920, and the remainder of the $1,175,000 will probably be invested in good roads before the end of 1921.
