" The object of this Institution is to encourage a taste for reading books of history, science and the arts, and beget a literary taste among mechanics of our city. It was incorporated in 1824, and been instru- mental in doing good. It has, by the fostering aid of the city, been enabled to build a hall for Lectures, besides having room in the lower story for a library and a variety of statuary and ornamenlal presents. It is also the receptacle of many books, &c. sent as donations for the bene- fit of the young. Every parent, guardian or master should become a subscriber to entitle him to the privilege of giving orders for books, the use of his child, ward or apprentice

Trustees of the South-Carolina College.


By an Act of the Legislature, passed December, 1825 --- The Board of Trustees of the South-Carolina College, consists of the Governor of the State, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Judges of the Court of Appeals, the Circuit Judges of the Court of Law, and the Chancellors, ex-officio, and twenty persons to be elected by the joint ballot of the Senate and House of Representatives, to continue in office four years.
