[GEN. NATHANAEL GREENE TO COL. WILLIAM CAMPBELL. ]
Sherard's ford on the Catawba river Jan: 30th. 1781.
Sir,
The enemy are pushing into the Country and are now as high up on the Catawba as Beatty's ford : and seem to be determined to dis- purse the Militia, and push the Continental troops out of this State. To prevent so great a misfortune I could wish you could [word destroyed] to our assistance 1000 good volunteer militia from over the Mountains, engaged to serve one Month after they arrive at Head Quarters. Such a force joined to what we have in the field and can collect upon such a footing will enable us to push the Enemy in turn and add new splendor to your own glorys and give the world another proof of the bravery of the Mountain Militia. Let me entreat you to come to our aid without loss of time.
General Morgan's success you have hear'd of I presume, and I have this Moment hear'd of the surprise of George Town one of the Enemy's out posts. It was [word or two gonel by Lt Coll. Lee and his Legion.
I am
with the highest respect Your Most Obedt. Servant

Public Service
Addressed: To Colonel Wm. Campbell Commanding the Militia from over the Mountains
Express
Camp Halifax C. House Feb : 18th. 1781.
Sir
Reports prevail that you are on the march to join the Army with a large body of Riflemen. It is said you encamped at the Iron works upon the Dan the night before last. I can hardly prevail on myself to believe that the report is true ; as I have hear'd nothing from you. However if you are on the march please to let me know it; and also what force you have with you and whereabouts you are. And it is my earnest desire you should join us as soon as possible. Our army will halt here untill the enemy cross, or begin to file off towards Hillsborough which I expect will be the case and therefore am anxious to collect a force as soon as possible to follow them ; and I am not without hopes of effecting their ruin.
I am Sir
Your Most Obedient
Humble Servant

Addressed : His Excellency Governor Guerard N Greene
Head Quarters. Charles Town March gt. 1783-
Sir
On the receipt of your letter of the 7th. I made some enquiry con- cerning the impressment of forage, and find there is no other mode fixed upon by Government for the supply of the Army. Due respect shall ever be paid to the Laws of the State when it is possible ; but in the present case one of two things must happen, impresses must go on or the horses starve. The first is a less evil than the last, and as the force now in the Country were detained here at the particular instance of the Delegates of this State, you cannot wish to sacrifice so great a property as the horses of the Army, independent of the cruelty of the thing, from a kind of delicacy to the Laws. It has always been my wish, and it shall ever be my study, to act conform- able to the Laws of every State where it is possible, but there are cases where it is not. The moment Government puts it in our power to stop those impresses, they shall cease ---
I am with due respect Your Excellency's
most obedient
Servant Nath Greene

Should your Excellency Concur with me in this opinion, this estimate may be proceeded on for April, and I shall be much obliged by new powers for the Continental Forage Masters to the end of March. whatever restric- tions it may be thought necessary to affix to these powers shall be punctually observed, and Returns of forage Collected from the cessation of Mr. Horts powers, to the Commencements of the new Forage Masters, shall be made to whomever your Excellency shall be pleased to direct.
