An Act passed confirming the purchase of a lot near the village of Louisville,* for a school-house. And a general power was conferred on the Vestry to purchase property, real and personal, with the Beres- ford Fund, and the same to hold and rosell, at their discretion, for the purposes of the charity.

The Rev. J. Julius Sams, Rector. The Rectory near the Parish Church, occupied by the Rector, was burned by the Federal troops. A new glebe had been purchased many years before this date, and the house shortly after erected.

A Methodist Church was organized, and a portion 1875 of the congregation of the Episcopal Church, who were dissenters, joined the movement.
An Act was passed allowing the Vestry to discon- 1878 tinue the support of children in the school, and con- fining their efforts to their education, until otherwise ordered by the Legislature.
April 6. The Rev. Robert F. Clute was elected 1880 Rector, including the instruction of the school chil- dren as a part his duties.
The public school, which had been connected with 1881 the Beresford school for about thirty years, was sepa- rated from the latter, on the complaint of some non- Episcopalians, who were new residents, and have since removed.
The buildings and grounds were enclosed by new 1881-3 fences. The former put in repair, and both white- washed.
The Parish Church is in excellent condition, and 1883 outwardly, excepting the doors, is fire-proof. The graveyard is without fence, and though cleaned during the winter, is overgrown in summer with bushes. The grave-stones are in sad neglect; some fallen, some broken, all more or less covered with mould or dirt. The old vestry-room, in one corner, is probably about 175 years old. It is mentioned in R. Beres- ford's will, 1715, and very likely was built at the same time as the church, in 1708. The Vestry hold their Easter-meeting there. The Pompion Hill Chapel is one of the very few colonial chapels remaining as built. The floor is tiled, the seats face the aisle, the pulpit, with sounding board and prayer chancel, are are at the vestry end, and the communion chancel at the opposite end of the aisle. The building is cracked on the chancel and river sides, which will soon be repaired, but is, otherwise, in good condition. The graveyard has recently been cleaned. Some of the graves, and the first Rector's (Mr. Hasell), have dis-

appeared into the river. In both yards many have been buried whose graves have become obliterated, and others of whom no record has been made in any register. But two families remain to attend the chapel. There are but five church families on the Wando, and they attend services at the School House Chapel. Nearly thirty white families live about Hell Hole Swamp, and twenty at Cainhoy and elsewhere. The old family residences, with very few exceptions, are going to ruin rapidly.
