Church History.

THE First Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury was organized the 21st of November, 1809 ; fifteen years after the settlement of the town. It consisted of nineteen members: six males and thirteen females. Its place of worship is in tho Centro village. The Second Church was a colony from the First, set off in . consent to the request of members living on the Plain, where it fixed its place of worship, and was organized on the 7th of April, 1825. This also consisted of nine- teen members : six males and thirteen females. The Third Church was organized in the East village, where it still worships. It consisted of twenty members : two of whom were from the First Church and eleven from the Second.

The increase of population upon the Plain and vicin- ity, required, for its accommodation, that the Second Church should provide a larger house of worship, which, upon completion, proved still inadequate for the wants of the increasing population. £ It was deemed necessary to provide another house, to bo occupied by a colony church. This fourth church, which was named the South Congregational Church of St. Johnsbury, was organized October 23d, 1851, con- sisting of sixty-six members : twenty-six males and forty females : sixty-five of whom were dismissed from the Second Church, for the purpose of effecting the new organization.

Confession of faith.

I. We believe that there is one God, a spirit, ctor- nally existent, infinitely perfect, the Creator and Governor of the universo, and is the supreme object of the love and worship of all rational beings.

Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord. Deut. 6: 4. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe and tremble. James 2 : 19. God is a spirit. John 4: 24. From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Psa. 90: 2. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, ^the only wiso God, bo honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. I. Tim. 1: 17. Who is like thee, glorious in holi- ness, fearful in praises, doing wonders ? Ex. 15: 11. Thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein ; the seas and all that is therein, and thon preservest them all. Neh. 9: 6.2 Of him, and through him, and to him are all things. Rom. 11: 36. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Ex. 20: 3. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Deut. 6: 5. Thou shalt worship no other god. Ex. 34: 14.

II. We believe that the books of the Old and New Testament contain the inspired record of a revelation of God to man, and are our ultimate standard of re- ligious belief and practice.

There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job 32: 8. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man; for I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Gal. 1: 11, 12. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profit- able for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. . II. Tim. 8: 16. Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. II. Pet. 1 : 21. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. John 14: 6. The scripture can not be broken. John 10: 35.

5

III. We believe that the scriptures record a revela- tion of God, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in such a manner as to indicate an eternal, three-fold distinction in the being of God.

(1) Doubtless thou art our Father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not. Isa. 63: 16. And now, O Lord, thou art our Father. Isa. 64 : 8. After this man- ner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven. Matt. 6 : 9.

(2) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. John 1: 14. God, who * * * spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, * * * who, being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high. IIeb. 1. : 2, 3. Unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever. Heb. 1: 8. Of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over. all, God blessed forever. Amen. Rom. 9: 5. I and my Father are one. John 10: 30. Who is the image of the invisible God. Col. 1: 15. In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. 2: 9. In him Das lifo. John 1: 4. I am Alpha and Omega, the be- ginning and the ending. Rev. 1: 8. Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matt. 18: 20. Thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. Heb. 1: 12. And they prayed and said, Thou Lord, which knowest the hearts of all inen, show whether of these two thou hast chosen. Acts 1: 24. My Father worketh hith- erto, and I work: John 5: 17. All things were made by him. John 1: 3.

(3) And he shall give you another Comforter, * even the * * Spirit of truth. John 14: 16, 17. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2: 4. Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Acts 5: 3, 4. The Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. I. Cor. 2: 10.

(4) Teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matt. 28: 19. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. II. Cor. 13: 14.

IV. We believe that man, created pure, has become alienated from God, and is in a state of condemnation 1*

6

and bondage, from which he can not free himself, and is only saved by the grace of God.

So God created man in his own image. Gen. 1: 27. Lo! this only have I found, that God hath made man upright, and they have sought out many inventions. Eccl. 7: 29. In Adam all die. I. Cor. 15: 22. They are all gone aside; * * * * thero is none that doeth good, no, not one. Psa. 14: 3. There is none righteous, no, not one. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Rom. 3: 10, 23. The carnal mind is enmity against God. Rom. 8: 7. Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Gal. 3: 10; 27: 26. The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness. Rom. 1: 18. I am carnel, sold under sin. Rom. 7: 14. By graco are ye saved, through faith ; not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph. 2: 8, 9.

V. We believe that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, made manifest in human nature, has, in his life, death and resurrection, wrought a redemptive work for man, so that through faith in him all men may be saved, and that God, through tho influences of tho Spirit, is endeavoring to draw all men unto him.

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels, but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren. Heb. 2: 16, 17. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son. John 3: 16. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. I. John 2: 1. Such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners. Heb. 7: 26. So, by the obedience of one, shall many be made righteous. Rom. 5: 19. Much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Rom. 5: 10. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. I. John 2: 2. In due time Christ died for the ungodly. While we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son. Rom. 5: 6, 8, 9, 10. And was raised again for our justification. Rom. 4: 25. Who is he that condemneth ? it is Christ that died, yea, rather, that is risen again. Rom. 8: 34. And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain ; ye are yet in your sins. I. Cor. 15: 17. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

7

Acts 16: 31. Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. I. Tim. 2: 4. Who is the Saviour of all inen, especially of those that believe. I. Tim. 4 : 10. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh. Joel 2: 28. And this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. Acts 2: 16. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16: 14. He shall teach you all things. John 14 : 26. No man can come to me except the Father, which hath sent me, draw him. John 6: 44.

VI. We believe that Christ has established a visible Church, in which all true believers become co-workers with him in accomplishing the redemption of the world, and that he has also instituted the church sacra- ments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, as symbol and memorial of the redemptive work.

And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach. Mark 3: 14. And ho said, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16: 15. And ye shall be witnesses unto me. Acts 1 : 8. And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to bo the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Eph. 1 : 22, 23. Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone; in whom all the building, fitly framed together, groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord. Eph. 2: 20, 21. And truly our fel- lowship is with the Father, and with his son, Jesus Christ. I. John 1: 3. Ye are the light of the world. Ye are the salt of the earth. Matt. 5: 13, 11. For we are his workman- ship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Eph. 2: 10. The church of the living God, and pillar and ground of the truth. I. Tim. 3: 15. Ye also as lively stones are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Ye are a chosen genera- tion, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people. I. Pet. 2 : 5, 9. Baptizing them in the name of the bather, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matt. 28: 19. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you ; this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Luke 22: 19, 20.

VII. We believe that there is to be a resurrection

8

of the dead, and after that the judgment, when the wicked will go away into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.

He is not here, but is risen. Luke 24: 6. And become the first fruits of them that slept. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. I. Cor. 15: 20, 22. It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. Heb. 9: 27. We shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ. . Rom. 14: 10. Behold the Lord cometh, with ten thousand of his saints, to execute judgment upon all. Jude 14, 15. When the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory, and before him shall be gathered all nations ; and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats; and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Matt. 25 : 31-46.

Covenant.

SENSIBLE of your guilty and lost stato by naturo, with no righteousness to commend you to the favor of God, and no power to rescue yourself (yourselves) from the dominion of sin, and gratefully accepting and ro- lying upon the offer of pardon and salvation through Jesus Christ, you do now, in the presence of witness- ing angels and men, enter into covenant with God and this church. Recognizing henceforth your utter con- secration to God ; professing it as your chiof desire to serve and honor him, and receiving him, as, in his grace revealed, your reconciled Father, Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and the Holy Spirit as your Sanctifier, you promiso to cherish the sense of your great obli- gation and privilege as a child of God; to make it your care to yield your heart to holy influence, to reg- ulato your conduct by the holy principles of the Gos- pel, and to endeavor in all things to walk worthily in the life of faith to which you are called.

In presenting yourself (yourselves) for membership to this church, you do also engage to submit to its lawful authority ; yielding yourself (yourselves) to christian counsel and admonition, and promising to attend upon all its ordinances, so far as providentially permitted; to maintain tho worship of God in public, in the household, and in secret; to watch over the members of the church in love, and to endeavor in all things to keep it pure in the sight of God and man;

and if, through the infirmity of a still unsanctified nature, you fail in aught in this your covenant with God and this church, you will wait on God in prayer for forgiveness, and for that light and strength requi- site to a more perfect obedience, that thus this church through you may be the better enabled to stand for the glory of God. Thus you solemnly covenant.

Then doth this church cordially welcome you to its fellowship, and renewing to-day our covenant with God and with each other, we do also now sincerely covenant with you, individually pledging you our chris- tian love, our prayers, and co-operation ; engaging to seek to walk with you as becometh saints, in watch- fulness, charity and brotherly kindness; and may we all grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, until we come, in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto the perfect man, unto the measure of the stat- uro of the fulness of Christ, and aro admitted to unite with each other and with all the redeemed of the Lord, in heaven, in ascribing blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for over and over. Amen.
