SAMUEL INGALLS Died May 13 1882 MARY CUTLER INGALLS Died July 15 1927 in Greensboro

Written by MRS MARY CUTLER INGALLS

NATHAN CUTLER, my great-grandfather, was born November 12 I736 in Medfield, Mass. Later he removed to Sturbridge, Mass.In I779 he removed and settled in Mendon, now Craftsbury Vt. His was the only white family in town during the winter of 1789-90. Their nearest neighbor being Ashbel Sheperd, six miles south in Greens- boro. Their two families constituted the entire population in Orleans Co.during that long and dreary winter. All their grain was brought from Newbury, distant more than fifty miles, over six- teen of which was drawn on a hand sled, the snow being from four to five feet deep. In the same manner also he drew hay for the

ni

support of his cow from a beaver meadow of wild grass three miles distant. During this winter Mr Cutler's family were cheered by the arrival of their step daughter, Miss MARY GERALD from Sturbridge, Mass. where she had been left for the purpose of attending school. (A daughter of MRS NATHAN CUTLER by a fromer husband) She was brought on here from Sturbridge by COL JOSEPH SCOTT as far as Ryegate Vt.where she was detained two weeks at the house of Cye Page and by him conveyed to the house of Deacon ELKINS in Peacham. After several days she arrived on horseback at the house of LIEUT LYFORD at Cabot Plains. The next morning she proceeded, being drawn on a hand sled by three young men, one of whom was OBID, A son of MR CUTLER's. Who can express the joy of that mother after such a season of loneliness. In the year of 1793 on the 25th of July MARY GERALD was married in Greensboro, ( there being no minister or qualified justice in Craftsbury) to TIMOTHY STANLEY. This was the first wedding in this section of the country. All of the inhabitants of the town were invited, nearly all attending. There were quite a family of children born to them, amongst others was LUCY STANLEY. She always lived in Greensboro, gas a teacher, after schools were established.

My first knowledge of the little post office cabinet, was seeing it in her room and her telling us that was the first Post Office, or where the mail was kept in Greensboro. She thought the first one in Orleans County. She lived to be aged and gave the cabinet to MISS OBID CUTLER to take care of when she was gone. Later Mr CUTLER, upon his removal to Northampton, gave it into my possession. WILLIE, my son, has it now. The old Continental bill was pasted onto the cabinet for safe keeping by MISS --

This cabinet is in the poseesion of MR WILLIAM SAMUEL INGALLS in Greensboro Vt.1933 and is I9 inches X II inches X 9 inches, with a solid door of wood and inside there are 25 small pidgeon holes, which sufficed for the whole county. The mail was brought from Boston once a month and deposited in this cabinet for the whole of Orleans County, Vt.
