INSCRIPTIONS

FROM THE

OLD CENTER CEMETERY. NORWICH, VERMONT

Reco. Nov. 20 1933

C. E. SMITH 1933

ה

THE OLD CENTER CEMETERY AT NORWICH, VERMONT 1288682

References: A History of Norwich, Vt. p. 149ff. by Goddard & Patridge Pub. Dartmouth Press, Hanover, N. H.

There are three cemeteries in Norwich which contain very early stones. That at Pompanoosue, the graveyard at the village, and the old Center cemetery. The last named is the one from which these records were copied in August 1933. Many of the stones were hopelessly illegible because the slate has scaled off. There are several types of stones: Native field stones uncarved; slabs of the mottled rock carved but hard to read; dark gray slate in the best preservation; marble ancient and modern; and at least one modern granite monument.

A brief history of each Norwich family will be found in the book named above, and further historical material in Thompson's Gazetteer of Vermont. The land for this graveyard was given by Hon. Peter Olcott, for four years Lieut. Governor of Vermont, and it was next the meetinghouse. The early settlers of this region came from Connecticut especially the towns of Norwich, Mansfield, Willington, Colchester, etc. where their ancestry may be traced.

At least two of the Norwich citizens were Lieu. Governors of the state; Peter Olcott for four years 1790-1794 and Paul Bringham 1796-1813.
