Robinson Homestead - 100 Years Town Clerk's Office

FERRISBURGH

VERMONT

Annual Report for the Year Ending December 31, 1957

Vergennes, Vermont, December 31, 1957.

Ferrisburgh Town Charter was granted June 24, 1762.

In 1785 Timothy Rogers, then Proprietor's Clerk, while moving by boat from Button Bay to a new site near Little Otter Falls placed the town records in a hollow stump for pro- tection from the weather. While helping his sick wife to the nearest house, the stump caught fire and most of the records were burned. The story of this incident was written in 1785 by Timothy Rogers and is recorded in the oldest Proprietors' Book which forms the basis for all land holdings in the Town of Fer- risburgh.

First regular Proprietor's Meeting was held December 27. 1786. Surveyors were Benjamin Ferris, David Thompson and others.
