Mr. Matt. B. James, Boster, Mass.

Dear Mr. Jones :-

Replying to your inquiry about my Rupert Inscriptions, will say that the edition was limited to 107 copies, as was also the case with Shaftsbury Records of which you had copy no. 34 sent you on Feb. 22, 1913. Possibly it may interest you to know that the data vere gathered and arranged, the type set, proofs read, forms printed, shoots folded by me practically without assistance. My work is teaching; but summer vacations are long and Vermont is healthy - even if people do die there - and cenealogic work my diversion. Faithfully yours,

Tevi M. Ewere.

[simplified spelling]

Preface

This booklet is intended primarily for genealogists, and secondarily for those interested in epitafic literature ; incidentally also it may serv as a sup- plement to Rupert records or as an appendix to the publisht history of the town. No dout it contains a copy of the sole extant record of some of the persons named in its pages ; and therein perhaps lies most of whatever value it may have.

The editor has tried to indicate: First, the exact lining of the inscriptions. and second, the original spelling and punctuation. To save space in print- ing, he has designated the end of the original lines by a vertical stroke; but no stroke is placed at the end of a paragraf. He has not been consistent in the use of capital letters ; and some stones are so wetherd that it was often hard, and sometimes impossible, to determin the punctuation. As it was out of the question to reproduce the original lettering, he has printed biogranc data in Roman letters, and verse in Italics ; but Latin, and rarely other mat- ter, is given in Roman caracter. Occasionally a defect (e. g. lack of the dot in i or j) or a peculiarity of the original has been imitated, sometimes in the text of the inscription, but oftener in a note.

Since many of the older stones are broken and have been reset, the lowest portion of some epitafs is under ground : to uncover and decifer these por- tions has often required both time and patience. In a few other cases, only repeated examination, in the most favorable conditions of light and shade, was sufficient to insure certainty.

It is hoped that such notes as are given may be found helpful; it was not always easy to draw the line between what has been admitted and what omitted. A book of this sort without an index is an imposition on the reader and should be a penitentiary offense ; so an index has been added. In the notes and index, some of the original defects and peculiarities that appear in the printed text of the inscriptions are not reproduced.

When nscriptions are recorded on different sides of a monument, the fact is indicated by the figures 1, 2, 3, 4, preceding the several groups of epitafs ; and altho I usually designates the front of the stone, the other three figures have no fixed relativ value.

With regard to the verse here printed, the editor ventures to express the hope that it will be red and quoted only with the reverence and sympathy due to those who had it recorded. Even the most beautiful verse utterly fails to express the beauty of human love.

Introduction

The gravestones of Rupert are usually marble, some are granit, rarely a brown or gray stone was taken from the locality. Most of them were set upright, hardly ever is one laid horizontally over the grave. The inscriptions are often limited to the biografic record; but many of the oldest stones also contain verse, eulogy, comment. Scripture, or prayer for the departed, and some are decorated with angels heds, weeping willows, ivy vines, or flowers.

At first the biografic data were commonly cut in small Roman letters with only the necessary capitals, but the use of capital letters thruout began erly, and now prevails almost exclusivly; verse, etc., was generally cut in Italics. The size of the letters varies with the width of the stone according to the importance of the words or the amount of matter to be included in the line. Hence it was not uncommon for the names of the deceast to be cut on a curv to obtain sufficient room. Superior letters stand sometimes alone, often with a horizontal line underneath, usually with one or two commas or periods be- low and with or without the intervening line. Errors of two kinds are not rare : First, single letters wrongly made - hence such names as Sheidon in capitals) for Sheldon, Soott for Scott, N with wrong slant, 9 and , with wrong curv, etc .; second, in lines where there was a slight lack of space, the last two or three letters are smaller, or a final syllable or short word would be put just above or below, or if two or three words were affected they might be written below to end even with the preceding part of the line. There are also many interesting and notable examples of simplified spelling.

The erliest deth here recorded is that of Justin Eastman, p. 51. The erli- est recorded in the Rupert old cemetery is that of Abigail Bailey, p. 16; but the stone was erected over fifty years later. The erliest birthdate indicated is that of Mary Sheldon, alias Mary Smith. p. 55.

Both the cemeteries in the village of Rupert are well kept, and the cem etery in the North village is in excellent condition.
