Twelve different people have been cared for during the year, seven for the whole year and five for part of the year. Two have died, Chestina Cutler and Frank Clark.
The town receives part payment for the board of Mrs. Wilson. Oscar Farrar has deeded his property to the town for his care. Eight are being cared for at this date.
Upon investigation by Stickney, Sargent & Skeels, it was found that in the Howard case of last year, Mr. Howard had no residence in Peru as he claimed but was a transient.
The town farm stock consists of the following :- Two horses, 6 cows, 3 two-year-old heifers, 3 calves, 1 bull, 2 pigs, 85 hens, 4 roosters.
The hay barn has been reshingled during the past year.
The galvanized water pipe running from the spring to the house became so badly filled with rust that it was necessary to replace it with lead pipe.
The swamp west of the buildings has been drained by the use of explosives at an expense of $108 42 for the material, Mr. C. T. Cutler and his man doing the work as well as the shingling and laying of the water pipe.
We had the misfortune to lose one cow, her death being caused by a piece of wire in the stomach.
The stock has been tested, resulting in one reactor. Full payment has not as yet been received from the state.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Chester, Vermont, Jan. 31, 1927
To the School Directors,
Town of Chester.
I am glad to submit a brief report of my work and observa- tions in your schools for the past year.
First, as to my work. I have made more than one hundred visits for observation of the teachers' work, and conditions at the schools. These visits have been supplemented by reports from the teachers on the progress of each class, in the elemen- tary grades. I have kept no record of the rather numerous con- ferences with directors when there has been need, but feel that no small part of my work has been in bringing you reports of matters that have needed attention, and in keeping the school machinery running as smoothly as possible.
Following the action of the town at the 1926 town meet- ing, extensive repairs were made on the North Street and Chand- ler school buildings. At North Street the cloak room was en- larged, a small room arranged so that chemical toilets could be installed, which was done, new seats bought, slate boards put in, lighting corrected, convenient cupboards arranged, and the buildings painted inside and out. The Chandler school building was moved to the site of the old brick building, onto a lot which was bought from Mr. Moore. When the building was moved it was found that a new ceiling was necessary, and a new roof. An additional section of the building was put in. A permanent chimney was built because the previous arrangement was unsafe. The interior was painted. While there are other desirable im- provements that could be made in each of these schools, I feel that they have been put into a very satisfactory condition, and a very big improvement made.
In October, through the courtesy of the Vermont Tubercu- losis Association, we were offered the services of a trained nurse for health work and inspection of the pupils. A visit was made to each of the elementary schools, and the children examined for underweight, sight, hearing, teeth, tonsils, etc. This service is offered by the same association at reasonable rates, if it is de- sired hereafter. While it is not as thorough as the examination that was previously given under the District Health officer, I feel that it is much better than the usual examinations by the teachers, and would recommend that arrangements be made for such an examination at the beginning of the next school year.
We have in all our schools about 300 pupils from Chester and about twenty tuition pupils. Our average school expense
39
per pupil is about $2 per week. Of this about one-fifth is paid by state rebates, income from tuition and other miscellaneous items. Our expenses in most respects compare favorably with those in other towns so far as I can make comparison.
For the coming year we shall probably need to increase a little the amount for teachers' wages. Some repairs will have to be made on the Gassetts school building, and if funds are available there should be further work done at Simsbury. If the repair work which has been done during the past two years could be continued for two or three years more, all of our build- ings would be in excellent condition.
Respectfully submitted,
PERCY H. BLAKE, Supt.
