Warren: "Better attendance at all services. Every Member Drive adopted, just now carried through. Mis- sionary Committee organized and doing a splendid work. Church incorporated as the United Congregational church of Warren. Salary and incidentals, also Sunday School ex- penses, fully met. Several families are more interested in the work of God. Many things to encourage and cheer."
The following might perhaps be said of several fields: "The people are very conservative and hard to change, nevertheless, habits, methods and ideas of thirty years' standing are giving way, and though we cannot keep step with the National Program, decided progress has been made during the past two years."

VERMONT DOMESTIC MISSIONARY SOCIETY
THE YEAR AHEAD.
Financially, we should have two goals: First, the mak- ing of still greater progress toward the raising of our full apportionment. The full apportionment would be twenty- seven per cent of $48,000, i. e. $12,960. Of this twenty-eight per cent or $3,629 would go for National Home Missions, ac- cording to our arrangement with the National Socety. This would leave $9,331 for work in Vermont, an increase of $3,829 or nearly seventy per cent over the church con- tributions of last year, and would plainly enable us to push our work much more fruitfully. Second, the laying of plans for securing our endowment fund of $100,000, toward which there is in hand about $40,000. Toward this fund we ought to obtain legacies, annuity (or "conditional") gifts, and large contributions from living donors. The additional income of about $3,000 from such a fund would give a steadiness to receipts, to be sure, but even more would make possible the taking of long steps in advance.
In general, how could this additional income of about $6,500 be used? First, for the increase of salaries of the missionaries both as a measure of justice and so as to in- crease the probability of. competent ministerial service. This increase to be secured mainly through the application of the "Dollar for Dollar" plan. There are now about twelve vacant fields fairly on the list of the Society. It is vain to expect competent men for these fields at the salaries formerly offered. Second, for the support of two Pastors- at-Large who will spend practically all their time among the churches, invigorating and counselling them when they are without pastors and lending a strong hand when they are with pastors. Two men of this kind would help vitally in solving the problem of the country church and would foster greatly the fellowship of churches and ministers. Without this frequent visiting by men who represent the whole body of our churches the requisite esprit de corps for our common task is impossible among churches and min-

sters. Third, for the special aiding of particular churches to become really equipped for solving the problems of their communities. The church in some instances must for a year or two be given such help that it can really become the center of community life. Fourth, for uniting with other denominations in a comprehensive plan to reach those por- tions of our State which no church is now even nominally covering. We cannot do this until we have helped each church to cover efficiently its present immediate field; but at the earliest possible moment we must take thought for the somewhat larger population of our State in "regions be- yond" to which a vital Gospel must be carried in so really human a way that the enormous difficulties of getting a re- sponse to it will be overcome.
But the possession of this large income will by no means insure the success so greatly needed. Two funda- mentals specially emphasized this past year must be carried forward with still greater emphasis. The campaign for Evangelism must be no mere spurt. The imperative need of invigorating and enlarging our church membership must be more keenly realized and the conviction deepened that communty life and individual life without Christ are poor indeed. And straight alongside this emphasis must be placed the movement for community service by the church as a whole and by each individual member. Christianity that is not applied is not Christianity. In simple, practical, definite ways that will appear when there is a will to find them, we must let our religion exert itself in the actual re- generation of our communities and of our State.
We shall hear a great deal during the coming year about the Inter-Church World Movement. It promises to aid mightily in bringing Christians of all denominations into working co-operation. It accords with what has been done in Vermont for the uniting of churches in small communi- ties. No one knows how far it may bring us on the way to organic church union. Let us pray that it be character- ized by the deepest spiritual power, that it may be indeed

one of God's own tidal movements. For apart from Him, in State or Nation or World, no matter how careful and comprehensive our plans, or how well-geared our machin- ery, we can do absolutely nothing in this stupendous work now laid upon the disciples of Jesus.
