REMARKS.
In this list of deaths, we find that from 1790 to 1850, there were 745 deaths at an average age of 27 years, 3 months, 20 days. But as there were 95 out of the 745 whose ages were not recorded, mostly infants, this would vary the average some- what.
From 1850 to 1901, there were 1868 deaths at an average of 44 years, 10 months, 16 days, with the names of 48 with ages unrecorded, mostly infants, again slightly diminishing the general average. We often hear it said that in old times people lived to a greater age than they do in this age of more luxurious living both in food and manner of dress, but the re- cords of this town show the contrary.
We have been able to trace out 2,613 deaths, but the early records of the town are so misleading that there were probably many that escaped the search. But to prove the average length of life, we find that there were but 219 from the total number, who reached the age of 80 years, and 29 who lived to be 90 years of age. Only one reached the century line, Thomas Boyle, who attained the great age 108 years, 5 months and 28 days. Teresa Duffney lived to be 99 years and 10 months old. In the list of those who reached the age of 90 years, seven out of every ten were women.
From 1790 to 1850, out of a total of 745, 48 reached the age of 80 years, an average of about one in fifteen, and 3 reached the age of 90 years, one in 248.
From 1850 to 1901 out of a total of 1868, 171 reached the age of 80 years, or about 1 in 11, 26 lived to 90 years and over, or nearly 1 in 72.
In the first 60 years after the settlement of the town, there were about six children born in town where there is one at the present time. Many of the children died while young, so that
71
the early population of the town had to be nourished by immi- gration. The minds and hands of many who are resting in their final sleep, acted the important part of bringing the town to its present condition. Many added their strength and worldly means to build our village up to where it is today.
There are three cemeteries, one in the village, one on South Hill, one at Smithville.
Those recorded as died out of town were buried here.
