* It will be noted that the installation of the pastors of the two churches took place on the same day. This was due to the desire of each church to secure the lot of land which was to belong to the first settled minister in town. In the ensuing litigation, it was established that the installation of Mr. Sherwin preceded that of Mr. Lee by two minutes. Small wonder that Congregationalism in Sunderland soon dis- appeared, and that the cause of religion received a setback from which it did not recover for years.
