CURTIS BATTLES, b. 1769; came from Stoughton, Mass., where all his children were born. His wife was Susan Bates, b. in 1763, and d. January 15, 1851. He came to Vermont, bringing his family with him, and settled in Braintree about 1812, and bought of Samuel Bass, father of Jonathan Bass, the farm subsequently owned by Henry Bass, now by Allen H. Flint. Samuel Bass built the house and barn, and while they were being built he occupied the Block House. He d. April 5, 1847; children:

2, Elisha R., b. in Hancock, 180 ~; came to Braintree in 1820; m. December 6, 1832, Deborah L. Parmenter of Berlin; removed to South Trenton, N. J., where he d. February 11, 1865; one child: Sidney H., resides at So. Trenton.
3, Patience, m. February 24, 1828, Ziba Bass; d. at Fond du Lac, Wis., December 1, 1882, aged nearly 80.
4, Abalena, b. in Hancock, January, 1813; d. in Cambridge, Mass.
5, Celenda, b. in Pittsfield, 1807; m. Melvin Densmore; settled in Braintree in 1833; afterwards went to Ohio; one child: Noah Cady, b. September 23, 1837.
6, Benjamin Franklin, b. in Hancock, 1815; came to Braintree in 1833; m. 1842, Betsey M. Sherburne of Barnard; blacksmith; removed to South Tren- ton, N. J .; d. at Atlantic, Iowa; one child: De Witt C., resides with his mother at Utica, N. Y.

CALEB CHASE, son of Seth Chase, who built and run the first saw mill and grist mill in Randolph, b. March 11. 1779; m. November 28 1805, Lucy Byam of Fitzwilliam, N. H., who d. November 28, 1866, aged 83 years, 6 months and 3 days; he d. September 2, 1862; children:
1, Lucy, b. August 19, 1806; m. January 12, 1826, Abel Byam of Fitzwilliam, N. H .; lived in Bethel; d. January 1, 1882.
2, Olive, b. August 11, 1808; m. (1) Joel Richardson of Roxbury; m. (2) Reuben Wakefield of Randolph and lived there; d. March, 1883.
3, Esther Byam, b. December 7, 1810; m. (1) December 2, 1830, Edmund Ken- ney; m. (2) Samuel Mann of Randolph, and lived there; d. November 23, 1859.
4, Betsey E., b. January 7, 1812; m. February 28, 1839, William L. Harwood; d. October 17, 1872.

PHILANDER CHADWICK was born in Randolph; m. October 9, 1836, Lucy Washburn of Northfield; settled at Snowsville in 1848; lived there 3 years; now at West Randolph; harness maker; children:
1, Caroline, m. Wm. J. Gabrielle; lived at West Randolph; now dead.
2, Susie, m. September 18, 1883, Wm. J. Gabrielle.

SILAS CHADWICK settled in Braintree November 26, 1837, on which day he m. Mary Washburn; harness maker; appointed postmaster at Snowsville April 6, 1850; after his death, May 31, 1859, his widow held the office till 1863; Mrs. Chadwick now lives in Bethel; children:
1, Edwin S., b. October 24, 1838; d. in U. S. service at Alexandria, Va., May 14, 1863.
2, Mary E., b. June 13, 1840; m. March 15, 1857, Charles Spear; residence, Randolph.
3, Sedora A., b. March 30, 1842; d. May 9, 1874.
4, Theodore A., b. July 24, 1844.
5, Eugene H., b. September 3, 1846; m. March 4, 1869, Saralı E. Farnsworth; residence, Brookfield.

LEANDER CHADWICK came to Peth in 1838; there worked at carriage making 5 years, after which for 6 years was a merchant at Snowsville; then went to Canada, but two years after removed to West Randolph and lived there till his death, 1864: m. October 18, 1840, Juliette Smith; children:
1, Jerome J., killed at the battle of the Wilderness.
2, Alice, resides at West Randolph.
