One of the seven United States Assay Offices is located in Seattle.
The Puget Sound Navy Yard, located just across the Sound from Seattle, at Bremerton, is one of the most important naval stations in the United States. One hundred steamship routes radiate from Seattle to all Puget Sound, Alaska, Pacific Coast and British Columbia ports, also to the Atlantic Coast, the Orient, Australia, Mexico, South America, Africa, Europe and other parts of the world.
The merchants of Seattle handle the great bulk of the Alaska and the Yukon Territory trade, the value of which is about $80,000,000 annually. The annual output of coal mined within 100 miles of Seattle is approximately 1,404,326 (1933) tons.
Seattle is the headquarters and chief base of supplies for the salmon and deep-sea fisheries of the North Pacific Coast and Alaska, the output of which returning $30,000,000 to $60,000,000 annually.
Seattle is one of the important centers for lumber, wheat, flour, canned salmon, fresh apples, copper, wool, mutton and hides in the Pacific Northwest.
The poultry industry has experienced a phenomenal growth in the last fifteen years, the production having increased from where it was necessary to import eggs to take care of the local consumption, to where many hundreds of carloads are shipped out of the state yearly. High egg production records result from the favorable climatic conditions and scientific management of the poultry flocks.
Dairying is one of the important agricultural industries in the Puget Sound district near Seattle. This region, comprising the most important dairy section in Washington, with its long pasture season and mild climate, lends itself to heavy and economical milk production. Here every condition conducive to successful dairying is found, and the most intensive sort of dairy farming has been developed.
