TO SUBSCRIBERS.

The purpose of a work of this nature needs no explanatory preface. Its every page being an example of its general utility and business im- portance. It is, as it were, an index to the great ledger of the commu- nity ; every party representing a family, or business avocation, will be found posted in its pages. That the compilation of a Directory is at- tended with obstacles, which retard and render difficult its perfect com- pletion, may be easily imagined, bnt a practical experiment is needed fully to test the vexations to be encountered.

Whenit is remembered that the copy for publication has to pass through the hands of the canvasser, the assorter or classifier, the com- positor, the printer and the proof-reader, the wonder is, not that some errors and omissions are detected, but that so few are to be discerned.

With this defender against the shafts of the critie the book is present- ed to the publie, with a hope that it will be found worthy of the patron- age of the citizens.

It is but a matter of justice to those who have kindly tendered infor. mation, and by their conrtesy and encouragement aided our canvassers for us to recognize, with many thanks, our sense of the obligations due.

Respectfully. SMITH, DU MOULIN & CO.
