INTRODUCTORY
Any one who makes a trip to the outskirts of the city cannot fail to be impressed by its growth. New houses spring up like mushrooms in the night, and before we realize their existence they are old by comparison with newer buildings. To those who have watched this phenomenal progress, the result of a canvass may be disappointing. One of the reasons for this discrepancy between the real and the apparent municipal growth is the differ- ence between the official city limits and the actual limits of the city. The city has out-grown its bounds, so that its real population, which logically includes all families on the outskirts having busi- ness in the city, is considerably larger than the official population, comprising only those who actually live within the city limits. Therefore the enumeration of those within the city walls will probably fall short of our expectations which are based upon the visible signs of growth about us.
The population within the official pale this year is 392,181, represented in the directory by 172,767 names. Last year the population was 384,272, based upon 169,283 names. Hence this year's intramural gain is 7,909.
