FOREST HOME CEMETERY.
HE main portion of the grounds now used as a burial place, bearing the name of FOREST HOME, was purchased of the heirs of the Rev. Lemuel B. Hull, former Rector of St. Paul's Church, Milwaukee, by a number of gentlemen, mostly connected with that church, to be passed over to the control of the Vestry of said church to be held by them in perpetual succession. The Vestry on their part, pledged themselves "that the land shall be forever appropriated to the purpose of the Interment of the Dead," and " that the Vestry shall make and enforce such Rules and Regulations in relation to the burying of the dead within the said grounds as they shall deem most conducive to the best interest of all concerned ; and that all funds arising from the sale of lots shall be ap- plied exclusively to the improvement and embellishment of the grounds."
The grounds were held and the affairs administered under the general charter of St. Paul's Church until 1864, when further powers were granted by the Legislature, under general powers granted to the Protestant Episcopal Soci- eties of Wisconsin to hold and administer real estate.
S
FOREST HOME.
The grounds thus set aside for the burial of the dead, consisted of seventy-two and one half acres, in the town of Lake, and are described as " situate at the junction of the Janesville Plank Road, and the Kilbourn Road," just out- side of the present limits of the City of Milwaukee, and about four miles from the Court House. The grounds were well wooded, gently undulating in surface and well adapted for the purposes for which they were set apart. By subsequent purchases the grounds have been enlarged to the present size of about one hundred and twenty acres.

FOREST HOME.
The plan adopted by the Vestry in laying out the grounds was first in general divisions called sections, designated by numbers or appropriate names, these again divided into blocks, and then subdivided into lots.
On the map the first is designated by large figures, near the center of the `section-the second by smaller plain figures, and the lots by still smaller.
LOTS.
So far as practicable, the lots have been surveyed twenty feet square, and this is the area designated as a full lot. Many of the lots are less than this in area, and the plat known as Faith Hill is subdivided in minute divisions. The price of a full lot is $200, and the smaller lots in proportion. Single graves $6.
Perpetual care of the lots is guarrnteed to all purchasers at the prices named above. Formerly the lots were sold at a much lower rate, and all purchasers at the lower rate can have this care guaranteed by an additional payment of ten dollars.

FOREST HOME.
THE SILENT CITY.
BY J. D. SHERWOOD. -
There's a city vast yet voiceless, growing ever, street on street, Whither friends with friends e'er meeting, ever meeting, never greet; And where rivals, fierce and vengeful, calm and silent, mutely meet; Never greeting; ever meet.
There are traders without traffic, merchants without books or gains; Tender brides in new-made chambers, where the trickling water stains; Where the guests forget to come, and strange, listening silence reigns; Listening silence ever reigns.
Ships sail past this silent city, but their owners quiet lie, And no signals fly from top-tree 'gainst the glowing crimson sky, Telling the neglectful owner that his well-built Argosy
For the Fleece is sailing by.
-
21
FOREST HOME.
Here the belle forgets the fashions, mindless of her snow-white dress, All unheeded now her toilet, free, ungathered, lock and tress; None here flatter face or figure, none come fondly to caress; Tresses flow, and none caress.
Hushed are all these many mansions, barred and bolted, door and gate; Narrow all the walls and earthy, and the roof-trees steep and straight; Room for all !- the high and lowly. Rich and poor here equal mate; Equal dwell and equal mate.
Flowers are blooming near these mansions, kissed by loving dews at night, Breathing softly round their porches, flowing through the cooling light, Pealing from their bells sweet music, pealing odors pure and white; Pealing only to the night.
Here each keeps his well-ceiled dwelling, fearless naught of quarter-day; Here no landlord duns the tenant, and no tenant moves away; Dwelling ever unevicted, dwelling on from May to May;
Paying never quarter-day.
22
FOREST HOME.
Beckons ever this mute city, to its comrades living gay; To its comrades laughing loudly, sitting on the pulsing day; Drawing from its masqueraders pale, white spectres day by day; Spectres now, men yesterday.
Thus two cities grow forever, parted by a narrow tide; This the shadow, that the substance, growing by each other's sido;
Gliding one into the other, and forevermore shall glide;
Growing ever side by side.
