Our National Commander-in-Chief
Albert Robert E. Coontz was born in Hannibal, Mis- souri, June 11, 1864. He received his preparatory educa- tion at Ingleside College, Hannibal, Missouri, and graduated from Hannibal, Missouri, College in 1880. In 1885 he grad- uated from the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and in 1926 was given the honor- ary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Missouri.
He was commissioned an ensign in the U. S. Navy, July 1, 1887, and was pro- moted through the grades to Rear Admiral in Decem- ber, 1917, and became a full-fledged Admiral in Oc- tober, 1919.
Upon receipt of his com- mission as Admiral in Oc- tober, 1919, Coontz spent six years in the Alaskan Service, becoming proficient as a pilot in those waters. In 1908 he was executive officer of the U.S.S. Nebras- ka on the voyage of the fleet around the world. During the year 1910-1911, Admiral Coontz acted as Commandant of Midship- men at the U. S. Naval Academy, and the following year he was sent to the Is- land of Guam where he pre- sided as Governor.
In 1913 Coontz was made commanding officer of the U.S.S. Georgia, which won the fleet gunnery trophy un- der his command. He was appointed Commandant of the Navy Yard at Puget Sound on July 20, 1915, where he remained until he was ordered to take com- mand of the Seventh Division, U. S. Atlantic Fleet in Aug- ust, 1918. That same year he was named Assistant Chief of Naval Operations and made a trip to the Pacific, with the fleet aboard the U.S.S. Wyoming as his flagship.
The appointment of Coontz as Chief of Naval Operations was confirmed by the U. S. Senate on October 24, 1919,
which assignment he held until August, 1923, when he be- came Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. fleet. He later com- manded the fleet on the Hawaiian-Australian-New Zealand cruise and upon his return was named Commandant of the 5th Naval District in November, 1925.
On June 11, 1928, Rear Admiral Coontz was retired by reason of age. He was advanced to the rank of Ad- miral on the retired list on June 21, 1930, by Act of Congress.
Admiral Coontz holds campaign medals from the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, service at Vera Cruz and the World War and has re- ceived the Distinguished Service Medal from the U. S. Government in recognit- ion of the brilliant achieve- . ments.
In 1923, he received the Distinguished Service Medal of the American Legion and from 1920 to 1923 he served as Commander General of the Military Order of For- eign Wars.
Admiral Coontz has been an active member of the V.F.W. for several years past. His son, the late Lt. Kenneth Lee Coontz, U.S.N., was at one time Commander of Robert E. Perry Ship No. 427, of the V.F.W. in Washington, D. C., and in 1923. he served as Com- mander of the District of Columbia Department. Ad- miral Coontz was elected to the office of Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U. S. at its 31st National Encampment held in Balti- more in August, 1930, and at Kansas City in 1931, he was elevated to the office of Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief. At Sacramento, in 1932, Admiral Coontz was unanimously elected Commander-in-Chief, the highest office within the organization he represents.
ADMIRAL ROBERT E. COONTZ
The Peace that passeth all Human Understanding
The Apostle Paul who wrote the above lines may have had in mind the mental ease that comes to all men who have builded securely and well for themselves and their families.
Statistical records prove beyond a doubt that years are added to a man's life when his mind is unwor- ried and free from the thought of dependency both as to himself and those for whom he is responsible.
The Special Retirement Endowment Contracts of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company lend themselves surprisingly to the uses of man in planning for those retirement years which should right- fully come to him as well as in preparing for the unforeseen contingency of premature death and all that it means to the family.
This is a personal message because it pertains directly to you-and one which you must make use of if you wish to attain the peacefulness of mind concerning which Paul has written.
We can help you in arranging a program which will accomplish these things. Of course you will not be obligated in any way if you wish to make use of our services in this connection. We are very glad to be of help. If you like, you may phone or write us for an appointment.

Van Zandt Shows Wide Experience
James E. Van Zandt enlisted in the United States Navy April 9, 1917, when he was a senior in the Altoona, Pennsylvania, high school. He was trained at the U. S. Naval Training Station, Newport, R. I., and on board the U. S. S. New York. In June, of 1917, he was transferred to the U. S. S. Albany and immediately placed on board an English Merchant- man as signalman for the First Mer- cantile Convoy to leave the States for Europe. For the remainder of the World War he served as a signalman on board various merchant ships, making twelve round trips under the supervision of the U. S. Armed Guard, with headquarters at Brooklyn, N. Y. Van Zandt served on board the U. S. S. Santa Paula in the return of
JAMES E. VAN ZANDT
troops to the States, making five round trips. Following this assign- ment, he served as athletic coach for the various sport teams at the Brook- lyn Navy Yard.
With the rank of Chief Quarter- master, Van Zandt was discharged in September, 1919, only to re-enlist in the Fleet Naval Reserve a few weeks later. He is still a member of the Re- serves, having taken the annual sum- mer cruises required by regulations.
Active in sports since boyhood, Sen- ior Vice Commander-in-Chief Van Zandt has held numerous A. A. U. championships. In February, 1924, he was called back to serve in the Navy as a trainer and represent the Navy in the 1924 Olympics at Paris, France. He has also been active in Boy Scout
work.
Starting with the Pennsylvania Railroad as an a-"rentice and serv- ing in all branches of railroading, he is now a special representative of the passenger traffic department.
As a member of the Veterans of Foreign wars of the United States, Van Zandt has served as Commander of Post No. 3 in Altoona, two succes- sive terms as Commander of the De- partment. of Pennsylvania, National Chief of Staff in 1930-31, and Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, to which office he was elected at the 32nd Nat- ional Encampment held in Kansas City in 1931. At Sacramento, in 1932, Van Zandt was advanced to Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief, ranking second in command to Commander-in- Chief Robert E. Coontz.

Milwaukee Posts Show Strength
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Milwaukee County who are hosts to the 34th National Encampment have been very active in veterans' affairs lately. They have organized a county bugle and drum corps under the lead- ership of Drum Major Crosby and have a drum with the V. F. W. Colors -blue and gold-with a cross of Malta inscribed on each drum. They have also organized a Milwaukee County firing squad to officiate at burials of veterans, or any patriotic observance. On Memorial Day and Armistice Day, these organizations al- ways officiate at the ceremonies to re- mind the public of the veteran. The Milwaukee County firing squad has adopted the regulation dress uniform of the United States Cavalry which embodies the blue and gold of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This squad is under the leadership of Sergeant Frank Miller.
A drum and bugle corps and firing squad composed entirely of overseas veterans is bound to increase the pop- ularity of our organization not only locally, but throughout the state.
Milwaukee County also has a ladies' auxiliary drill team composed of members of the auxiliary of Milwau- kee county under the leadership of Drill Master Hocking.
In addition to the above mentioned county organizations, several Milwau- kee posts, namely Runge Post, have a drill team consisting of its own mem- bers under the leadership of Comrade Buege. The Runge Bros. Ladies' Aux- iliary also has a drum and bugle corps of their own. Nowak Plunkett Post has a highly efficient degree team which adds the needed prestige to an initiation of members.
These are the outstanding features of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Milwaukee County and our slogan is "Watch Us Grow."
FIRST V.F.W. CHIEF TO BE PRESENT AT THE 1933 ENCAMPMENT
Milwaukee will have the distinction of entertaining the first commander- in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States when this organization holds its 34th national encampment in that city August 27- September 1. He is James C. Putnam, West Plains, Missouri, who is a mem- ber of the Missouri state legislature at the present time.
Putnam wrote the first constitution and first set of by-laws of the Vet- erans of Foreign Wars of the United States when it was first organized in Columbus, Ohio, on September 23, 1899.
