EXPLANATORY.
In compiling and arranging alphabetically the list of ex- soldiers and sailors of the late war, residing within the state on June 20, 1895, as taken by the census enumerators, an attempt has been made to separate the names which are credited to Wisconsin organizations from those credited to other states. Separate lists have also been prepared of the names credited to the Navy, United States Regular Army, Marines and Colored Troops; all being arranged alphabetically under separate heads.
On account of imperfect penmanship and orthography, the omission of the company letter or number of regiment, and other errors, it has been found to be impossible, in a few instances to identify some names with any Wisconsin regiment or company. All such names have therefore been placed in alphabetical order with the "Soldiers of Other States. "
The total number of names returned by the enumerators is 26,307. The number contained in this volume is 26,367, divided as follows:
Wisconsin troops
17,292
Other states troops. 7,984
United States Regulars 384
Navy and Marines 384
Colored troops.

The excess in the number of names in this volume over that returned by the enumerators is explained by the fact that a good many soldiers and sailors living in county and state hospitals, and other places, overlooked by the
vi

census takers, have since been added. All names received too late, or for other causes, which do not appear in their proper places, have been arranged alphabetically, and will be found immediately preceding the Wisconsin soldiers.
It will be of interest to note that according to the official records, the total number of men Wisconsin is credited with having furnished to the war is 91,327, divided as fol- lows: Infantry, 77,375; cavalry, 8,877; artillery, 5,075. Of this number, 3,802 were killed in action or died of wounds; and the number of deaths from all other causes, 8,499. Total deaths, 12,301. Of the 79,000 who were supposed to have been alive at the close of the war, this volume shows 17,292 were still living in the state on June 20th last, and di- vided and credited to the several branches of the service as follows: * Infantry, 14,551; cavalry, 1,670; artillery, 1,071.
A summary of the number of names of each Wisconsin regiment, battery and other organization shows that the first regiment of heavy artillery has the greatest number of living members in the state (542), and the eleventh bat- tery of light artillery, the least (8). The number credited to each is as follows:

It is to be hoped the publication of this list of ex-soldiers and sailors will be the means of locating the post-office ad dresses of many of the " boys" who have been lost to their former comrades in arms.
