Mrs. David P. Kimball was a friend of the more recent vcars, but the $1,000 addition to our Invested Funds will mean her ever continuing support.

Mr. Charles C. Drew first expressed an interest in Cal- houn by a contribution of gio. His death occurred a short time later, and we were deeply touched and surprised by his large legacy to Calhoun, amounting to $18. 177.

22

Mr. Charles H. Merriman gave his annual support for twenty-three years without omission. His legacy of $1,000 gives further assurance of his deep interest and of his kind and wise thought for the future of Calhoun. We have sustained many losses this year and are thinking of each one, but will mention by name only those who have been constant in their interest and support for twenty-five years or more. Mrs. F. H. Gaylord, Mr. Charles P. Bowditch and Mr. James Richardson had all reached the quarter-century mark.

Calhoun Workers :- Of the two losses by death in our force, that of Mr. Chesnutt has been entered earlier with an appreciation of his long and valuable service.

Miss Cornelia A. Scott is remembered by all at Calhoun with full recognition of the beauty of the young life which entered upon the year's work with us. With enthusiasm she came down in the early fall. After two weeks' stay we found she was not well, but were influenced by her urgent appeal for a longer trial. After hospital care in Montgomery she left us to return to her Northern home. A few months later we were grieved but not surprised to hear that Miss Scott had died suddenly, April 17, 1921, by progress of the disease from which she had been suffer- ing. Her life just entered upon, for she was only eighteen, left a strong impress for good upon all at Calhoun.

Calhoun enters upon its thirtieth year on June 1, 1921. It is our earnest hope that it will be the best in its history. As I look back over all these years it seems as if visions of 1892 were slowly but surely materializing into the con- crete form of realities. May we not hope this thirtieth year for large financial support with early gifts so that time and strength can be devoted to the unfolding of future plans as well as to the strengthening of present work?

It is with sincere and deep gratitude to every one who has helped Calhoun that acknowledgment is made to those who support Calhoun, to the Trustees who also guide and direct, and to the workers who untiringly and unselfishly give of their best to the School and community.

Respectfully submitted,

CHARLOTTE R. THORN,

Principal.

TREASURER'S REPORT.

TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE CALHOUN COLORED SCHOOL :

Gentlemen,-The report of the Treasurer of Calhoun Colored School is herewith submitted for the fiscal year ended May 31, 1921.

Invested Fund. To the Permanent Invested Funds there was added $34,882.37, the largest amount ever received in one year. Of this total amount $34,552.95 represents legacies from the following estates: The final payment of $14,177.96 from the Estate of Charles C. Drew, the first payment having been made during the year 1919-20. We received from the Estate of Mrs. Alfred T. White $10,000, and from the Estate of Mr. Alfred T. White $8,375; from the Estates of Mrs. David P. Kimball and Mr. C. H. Merriman $1,000 each. In addition to these legacies the Calhoun graduates added to their Scholarship Fund $119, and to the Minthey E. Wiley Memorial Fund $210.41. This brings the total of our Invested Fund to $149,112.87, for the detailed account of which I refer you to the Report of the Investment Committee.

Permanent Improvement Fund. Large additions were made to the Per- manent Improvement Fund in response to the "1920 Special Appeal" for the much-needed improvements of the place. Through the generous response of our friends we received for this special fund $62.393, which is the largest amount ever received in a single year for improvements. Of this amount $25,143 was subscribed by individuals in addition to special gifts to this fund the previous year. The Gen- eral Education Board redeemed its pledge for $35.000. made under condition that the total amount of $109.125 should be raised; the Phelps-Stokes Fund added $2.000 and the Keith Fund $250.

Current Fund.

Among the receipts for the current year.

the first item of interest is $27.334. a part of the "1920 Special Fund." the appeal for which included a sum toward wiping out the deficit for the year and to be included under the Current Expense

24

receipts. The following gifts were received : The Gen- eral Education Board in addition to the amount for the Fund above referred to, appropriated $5,000 toward the running expenses; from the Slater Fund $900; from the Frothingham Fund $101; from the Phelps-Stokes Fund $250; from the Boston Calhoun Club $2,000; from the New Haven Calhoun Club $900; from Churches and Soci- eties $850, while from individuals there was received $24,368, making the total donations of the year toward the Current Expenses $61,703. I mention these in detail for fear that some friends do not have the courage to look through the financial statement following this report.

As usual, new givers were gained during the year and friends of the past were reclaimed. In this way we try not only to offset the losses through death and other causes but also to add to our constituency each year. It is inter- esting to note that from year to year with the growth of contributions there is also a small but steady increase in the amount paid by the students for tuition and board. We are endeavoring to increase the responsibility of the community in the support of the School.

Expenditures. The expenses of the year, as shown in the accompanying cash statement, unfortu- nately also show a slight increase of $3,801 over the expenses of the previous year,-a small amount when we take into account that we had a larger number of boarding students, a heavy interest to pay on necessary loans for running expenses, and in consideration of the continued high cost of all supplies and labor.

At the end of the year, May 31, we show a heavy debt in the form of a loan made to enable us to pay all salaries, wages and bills, also to have a liberal sum at the close of the year to enable the School to carry its heavy summer expenses of the year 1921-22. It was impossible to con- sider any summer campaign for the raising of money on account of illness and because the clerical force had to be released for the work connected with the improvements, thus lessening the time for publicity work.

One of the strongest efforts of the year has been to guard carefully the expenditure of each dollar intrusted to our care, and there was splendid cooperation on the part of the heads of all departments in the furthering of this effort.

25

It is difficult to adequately thank the friends who have made the year's work possible, but most earnestly do we make acknowledgment to every friend, whether an individ- ual or an organization, for the support of our work. The generous financial aid as well as the trust and interest expressed through these gifts and through the many letters of encouragement and belief in what Calhoun stands for. have bridged us over many a difficult and depressing situation.

The work of Calhoun rests largely in the continued loyal. generous support of her friends, and with the conviction that this will be accorded us, we are about to enter upon our thirtieth year of school work and life.

Respectfully submitted, C. R. THORN. Principal.
