1833 RECONSTRUCTED CENSUS OF SCOTT COUNTY, ARKANSAS
To reconstruct the census of Scott County, Arkansas for the year of its creation is an impossibility and therefore an absurdity.
With that statement out of the way, I hasten to say that to attempt that task is far better than letting it lie in limbo, so I will undertake the job.
Scott County was created by an Act of the Arkansas Territorial Legislature and approved by Territorial Governor John Pope on 5 November 1933.
The boundaries of the county were stated as follows :
"That all that portion of the counties of Crawford and Pope, included within the following boundaries, to wit: Beginning or the western boundary line of the territory at the point where the line between Townships three (3) and four (4) north of the base line strikes the same, running east with said line to the range line dividing ranges twenty-three (23) and twenty-four (24) west, thence south with said line to the dividing ridge between the waters of Fourche Lafave and Washita, thence west with said ridge to the western boundary of the territory, thence north with said line to the place of beginning, --
The above Act appointed three (3) commissioners, Walter Ccthran, Robert Mayes, and William Wood, to supervise an election to fix the permanent location of the county seat of Scott County.
The Act also established the temporary county seat as the residence of Walter Cothran. Mr. Cothran's residence at that time was located southeast of the present day town of Boonville (W1/2 of NW 1/4, Section 5, Township 5 North - Range 27 West, Recorded 11 April 1842 with patent entry of 1830 noted) .
The three (3) commissioners and the temporary county seat were all more than twelve miles north of the north boundary of Scott County as defined by the said Act. This error was not corrected un- til 24 October 1835 when new boundaries were defined as follows :
"Book 1835

Scott.
SEC. 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE TERRITORY OF ARKANSAS, That all that portion of the courties of Crawford and Johnson included within the following boundaries, to wit: begin- ning at a place on the line between the United States and the Choc- taw Indians, at what is commonly called the Back Bone or dividing ridge, between fort Smith and James' Fork of the Porto, running thence eastwardly, crossing the Vash Grass, and keeping the general course of the main dividing ridge, crossing Six mile creek at what is commonly called the Narrows, continuing on the main divide to where the line between ranges twenty-three and twenty-four west, crosses said dividing ridge, thence south with said range to the main dividing ridge between the waters of Fouche Lefeve and Washita, thence westwardly with said dividing ridge to the Choctaw boundary line, thence north with said line to the place of beginning, shall be, and the same is hereby, erected into a separate and distant county, to be called and known by the name of Scott.
APPROVED :
Oct. 24, 1835."
