AND MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.
The publisher in presenting this annual issue of the DIRECTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO, takes pleasure in referring to its improved typographical appearance. The type adopted renders the volume more convenient in size, and more tasty in style. The canvass for names has been prosecuted with great care and vigilance, and the result as presented may be accepted by the public as a personal and business guide, combining completeness with reliability to as great a degree as is possible in the preparation of such a work in a city where removals, changes, and periodical absentees are so numerous as in San Fran- cisco. The number of references in the volume has largely increased, while the statistical matter of the introductory pages which has been prepared with much care and research also indicates a gratifying growth of the city. The publisher tenders his acknowledge- ments to the public for the general approval of the results of his efforts to furnish an acceptable and popular Directory.
POPULATION OF THE CITY .- San Francisco appears to have fully maintained its volume of growth during the past year notwithstanding some adverse circumstances and a general complaint of hard times and of prevailing dullness. The truth is that San Francisco is so situated with reference to immigration and trade that more than a single dull season is necessary to interfere materially with her regular growth and advancement. The number of buildings erected during the year is nearly as large as ever before. There is a consider- able increase in the number of municipal licenses issued and in the number of men employed in manufactories. To arrive at a reliable estimate of the population one must have a basis of facts from which to calculate. A certain nearly obsolete directory concern of this city estimates in this wise : It takes the census of 1870, then it guesses at a per- eentage of gain, which is added from year to year. But as BISHOP'S DIRECTORY is always first issued, and as the figures of the other are usually almost identical, it is fair to infer that this publication guides the other somewhat, in its guessing. We estimate from ascer- tained facts and make our deductions from figures verified in numerous instances by the official census. The population of the city in January, 1877, was 295,117, of which 265,538 were whites, etc., and 29,979 Chinese. The number of persons under seventeen years of age by the school census July 1, 1876, was 71,436. The number by the school census of 1877 was 80,245 ; increase, 8,809. The ratio of persons under seventeen to the total population is 1 to 3.5, as ascertained by the average of twenty-seven large cities of the Union. Assuming that the increase for the latter half of the year 1877 was equal to that of the first half we have 84,650 as the correct number of persons under seventeen on January 1, 1878, which gives us a white population of 296,275. The Chinese population has remained about stationary, the small excess of arrivals over departures having been offset by deaths and other causes. The population of the city is, therefore, 326,244. The number of references in this Directory is 98,031, which allowing the ratio of references to the total population as 1 to 31/3 gives a population of 326,770, agreeing very closely with the estimate based upon the school census. The increase for the year has been a little over 9 per cent.
FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL .- We present below tables showing the exports of leading articles of California production, and of merchandise and treasure, giving some compar- isons with the figures for 1876. The exports of wheat were less than half the amount for the preceding year, but the higher prices obtained brings the value of that cereal exported up to about 70 per cent. of the value exported in 1876. Other articles of domestic pro- duction show a decrease, except wine, which shows an increase of about 40 per cent. The production of quicksilver, copper and salt were also considerably in excess of former years. The aggregate of exports of California products will exceed twenty-seven millions of dollars, and exports of merchandise reach nearly twenty-nine and a half millions, a decline in values from 1876 of about four per cent., but an increase in quantity, owing to a reduction in prices of many articles. Exports of treasure reach the large sum of fifty- seven millions six hundred thousand dollars, against forty-nine millions seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars in 1876. Receipts of treasure were seventy-one millions seven hundred thousand dollars, showing an apparent gain to the city in this species of wealth

of over fourteen million dollars. Clearing House returns show exchanges to the amount of $517,000,000 for 1877, an increase over 1876 of $23,000,000.
The long continued depression in industry and trade which has prevailed throughout the United States and Europe, has had its legitimate effect upon San Francisco ; still, but for the dry season, entailing a failure of crops, the volume of business would have largely increased during the year. Every branch of industry and trade suffered ; mining opera- tions were retarded, and immigration was checked. But for this circumstance of local drouth the city of San Francisco and the whole Pacific slope would have prospered abundantly, while depression prevailed elsewhere throughout the world.
Several concerns, improperly styled savings banks, have failed during the year, entail- ing serious losses upon a portion of the community, that can ill afford such lessons as they have learned thereby. The distrust of our remaining institutions for savings, which to a certain extent prevails, is unfounded, and should be dismissed from the public mind. Long established and honorably conducted, doing business in a safe and legitimate way, the savings banks of San Francisco are entitled to all the confidence they ever enjoyed, which was full and general.
Rates of interest have considerably declined, and a disposition, in view of the abund- ance of money, and the easy terms of its procurement, will, beyond a doubt, stimulate building, and all other enterprises during the present year.
RECEIPTS OF CUSTOMS .- The cash duties collected on foreign imports for the year 1877 were $6,722,913, and the total customs revenue was $6,779,904. These figures are less by $1,271,765 than those for 1876.
