INTRODUCTION

In the preparation of the 1919 City Directory for Glendale and Casa Verdugo, no time nor expense has been spared to make the book one of value to the entire community. Every effort has been put forth to the end that the information contained in this volume should be correct, although the con- stantly shifting population makes absolute accuracy in a book of this kind impossible.

Valuable features which have been considered in compiling the book are :

1. A correct listing of the residents of the City of Glendale, giving the names of young children with the parents, and listing the names of adult children separately, thus giving the complete enrollment by name of all the people residing in the city.

2. A Householders' List, giving streets in alphabetical order and numbers consecutively, with the name of occupant or owner of the house, thus enabling one to learn at once who lives at a certain number on a given street.

3. An accurate enumeration of the population of the city, giving number. of males and females.

4. Location of all the streets of the city, with relation to other streets.

5. A condensed history of the city and names of officers of churches, schools, clubs and other organizations.

6. Recognition of the men and boys who are or were in any branch of their country's service during the late war by a star following their names.

7. Valuable information in regard to the city government.

The publisher wishes to suggest to the citizens of Glendale that it would be to the interest of all people residing in the Glendale community to have a city directory published annually, and he wishes to make a further suggestion

that the right to publish such directory be governed by the Greater Glendale Development Association, or a similar organization that has the community's welfare at heart.

It has been the aim of the publisher to get out a directory of merit, and the question of commercialism has not entered into the preparation of this work. However, it is a fact, on record in our office, that the cost of publish- ing this year's directory exceeds the money received for advertising and subscriptions by four hundred dollars. This additional expense is borne by the publisher, and his only reward is the satisfaction of knowing that the community has an authentic and exhaustive reference book.

The "get-money-easy" method which is practiced by the professional directory man will be all right for the publisher, but when the work is in the hands of such an individual the usefulness of the book is greatly lessened.

The publisher takes this opportunity to thank all those who assisted in making this volume the best Directory of the City of Glendale ever published.

A. T. COWAN, Publisher.
