PREFACE

EW persons realize the magnitude of the work of publishing a directory. Every place of business and residence must be visited and the names taken. Then the names are arranged alphabetically and compiled, that is duplicates thrown out, corrections made, incomplete information amended, etc. The entire canvass is checked with the last book to ascertain what names have not come in. These names are copied from the old book and sent out for investigation, together with memoranda of all vacant houses reported in the canvass. Upon return of these "send outs" the changes and new information are embodied in the original canvass and the whole is prepared for the printer, making about 6,000 pages of manuscript copy for Oakland City and 10,000 pages for the whole county.

A causal comparison of this directory with an ordinary book will give an idea of the difficulties to be overcome by the printer.

The present volume contains 38,164 names in the Oakland department, 7,827 in Alameda and 7,471 in Berkeley. Eastern directory publishers multiply the number of names by 3 to obtain the entire population, they taking but 33 per cent, but for the Oakland Directory we have been much more thorough, giving names of unmarried ladies, young people above the age of 16, students, etc., who are left out of Eastern books, so that we get about 45 per cent. This would make the population of Oakland 84,808, Alameda 17,393, Berkeley 16,600.

The county, outside of the three cities, has a population of about 25,000 making the total population 143,801.

We desire to acknowledge many courtesies and much valuable information and assistance received from county and city officials and from business men generally.

ALAMEDA COUNTY

Its Resources and Attractions.

Alameda County has an area of 512,000 acres or nearly 800 square miles. It stretches for 40 miles along the famous bay of San Francisco and extends east- ward 50 miles to the line of San Joaquin. It contains within its boundaries all var- ieties of soil and climate and unmeasured resources in every line of material de- velopment.

The County is traversed by two ranges of mountains or rather hills-the Contra Costa and Mt. Diablo-which converge at the south. These ranges form an im- passable barrier to the ocean winds from the west and the icy breezes from the Sierras on the east, making the great Livermore Valley the natural home of the vine and the fruit tree. All the tropi- cal fruits, vegetables and flowers flourish in luxuriance as well as those of the temperate zones.

Nature made it a Garden of Eden in possibilities and the intelligent efforts of a highly cultivated and progressive popu- lation have developed those possibilities until nowhere in the world can there be found a more prosperous or contented people than here.

HISTORICAL.

The first settlement by white men in the County was at Mission, San Jose, in 1797 (June 18th).

The party that founded the Mission came overland from Monterey and seems to have been made up of men of unusual judgment and energy. At least this, the eleventh settlement founded by the Mis- sion Fathers, soon outstripped all the others in influence and prosperity, its herds of cattle and sheep grazing un- checked from the warm springs of the south to San Pablo and Martinez. The cultivation of the soil was here carried

on in a very primitive style, but the ex- ceeding fertility of the soil and perennial returns of grain and vegetables as the reward of moderate labor made poverty or hardship unknown.

But the war came in 1846 and then an- nexation accompanied by the hustling Yankee. He came to Alameda County in large numbers. He always knows a good thing when he sees it. To get to the gold mines of the interior, many crossed Alameda County, and of the many, not a few then or later came to stay and make here their homes sur- rounded by fruits and vines and embow- ered in flowers more luxurious and beau- tiful than grow in the Vale of Cash- mere.

Alameda County was carved from Santa Clara and Contra Costa Counties by an act of the State Legislature, passed in 1853, approved March 2Sth. The act was introduced by Henry C. Smith, who lived at Alvarado, then called New Haven, and under the act New Haven was designated as the County Seat.

The duties now performed by the Board of Supervisore were delegated to a "Court of Sessions" composed of the County Judge and two Justices of the Peace. The first meeting of this body- was held at Alvarado, June 6th, 1853. Its members were Addison M. Crane, County Judge, and I. S. Long and David M. Lacy, Justices of the Peace. Their first business was the division of the County into Oakland, Contra Costa, Clinton, Eden, Washington and Murray Town- ships. This division was changed De- cember 12, 1853, and Contra Costa Town- ship was incorporated into Oakland Township.

On January 5th, 1878, a readjusment was made by the Board of Supervisors and

the Townships were established as now existing, viz., Alameda, Brooklyn, Eden, Murray, Oakland and Washington.

Under the act of March 9th, 1855, ap- proved March 20, 1855, the Board of Supervisors of Alameda County was cre- ated. The first Board consisted of Henry C. Smith of Washington, J. W. Dougherty, Murray; S. D. Taylor, Eden; J. L. Sanford, Clinton; Jas. Millington, Alameda. " Mr. Dougherty was selected chairman.

At the time of the first election held in California, November 13, 1849, there was only one election precinct in what is now Alameda County, viz., San Antonio (now East Oakland. Now there are 128.

At first there were six school districts, corresponding with the Townships. Now 55.

In those early days there were some peculiarities about elections from which the modern politician might derive valu- able hints.

On March 26, 1853, an election was held for member of the Assembly. The candi- dates were Horace W. Carpentier, Robert S. Farrelly and B. R. Holliday. Mr. Car- pentier received, or at least claimed 519 votes, Mr. Farrelly 254 and Mr. Holli- day 192-in all 965. In a subsequent con- test it was ascertained that only 377 votes were cast, and further that when the census was taken ten weeks before the election there were only 130 voters in the district Mr. Carpentier was declared elected. In May, 1853, the first election of County officers took place. It was known as the "Steeple Chase," there

being on an average six candidates for each office.

It may be interesting to note that on August 4, 1851, a license was granted by the Court of Sessions of Contra Costa County for the first ferry between Oak- land and San Francisco. The charges for passage were as follows:

For one person $1 00

For one horse 3 00

For one wagon 3 00

For one two-horse wagon. 5 00

Neat cattle per head. 3 00

Sheep per head. 1 00

Hogs per head.

1 00

Freight 50c per 100 lbs

The first bill audited at this first ses- sion of the Court of Sessions contained the following items:

D. S. Lord, for blank books and sta-

tionery $425 00

A. M. Church, services obtaining books, etc 49 00

Homer & Stevens, lumber for

desk .. 26 00

Ferham & Weaver, work on desk .. 81 00

On December 30th, 1854, an election was held to select a new County seat, result- ing in a removal to San Leandro. In 1855 it was returned to Alvarado and in 1856 again removed to San Leandro, where it remained until 1874, when it was removed to Oakland after a long and hard fight in the Legislature, the courts and popular election.

Following is a complete list of County officials since the organization of the County:
