According to the University Bulletin is- sued in May, 1899, there were at that time 2,438 students in all departments. Young women are admitted to the University on equal terms with young men.


It is only 32 years since the passage of the Act establishing a University; only 27 since the buildings at Berkeley were oc- cupied, but the above sumary shows that magnificent work has been done in that time; that the University has taken rank among the great institutions of learning of the world


By the generosity of Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, one of its Regents, the Univer- sity was recently able to invite the ar- chitects of the world to enter a competi- tion, which has resulted in a scheme of construction worthy of the magnificent site and worthy of the great State of California. a more thorough outline of the resources and attractions of Alameda County. We have ample material for a volume and regret that this sketch, which is neces- sarily confined chiefly to statistics, could not be made more fully to represent the natural, industrial and educational ad- vantages of the County.
