PREFACE.
WE, the publishers of the Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley Cities Directory, . take pleasure in presenting to our patrons and the public this volume of work.
There has been devoted to the compilation of this work an amount of energy, patience, and perseverance which entitles it to the consideration of all who have occasion to use it.
The general plan of the work is almost identical with that of former Direc- tories. The earlier pages are devoted to lists of the County and City Officers, Courts and Judges, Educational resources, Societies, Churches, Banks, Railway systems, Post-offices, etc. Following will be found the register of names of the inhabitants of Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley, together with an official lis. of City Officers, etc., of the two latter cities, preceding the register of names. thereof.
For the occasional errors and discrepancies which may have occurred, an, apology is not considered necessary, when the many and various sources from: which the information is obtained are taken into consideration.
We take great pleasure in returning thanks to all who have assisted us in the. preparation of the work, and to those who have so liberally bestowed their patronage on it, and desire to express the assurance that nothing shall be wanting on our part to make this Directory the only standard publication of its kind.
