BERKELEY.

BERKELEY lies on the eastern shore of the Bay of San Francisco and about five miles north of Oakland. It was organ- ized under a special town charter in the year 1878, and still continues under the same government. East Berkeley, aside from being the seat of the State University, consists principally of residences of men whose business is in San Francisco. West Berkeley is chiefly devoted to manufacturing interests. During the past year the new sewer system has been extended, and an Electric Light Co. and a National Bank have been organized.
