WILLFUL INFRINGEMENT FOR PROFIT .- Any person who willfully and for profit shall infringe any copyright secured by this title, or who shall know- ingly and willfully aid or abet such in- fringement, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction there- of shall be punished by imprisonment for not exceeding one year or by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $1,000, or both, in the discretion of the court.

Confidence in the continued growth of Oakland's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Di- rectory is a mirror truly reflecting Oakland to the world.

Three Major Departments

The three major departments are arranged in the following order: -

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the adver- tisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the community, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the community. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Oakland, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, in- dustrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of the Oakland area, and the name, offi- cial personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in that area.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of owner occupied homes, the listing of telephone numbers and Zip Code numbers.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an edu- cational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Direct- ory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpet- ual and reliable advertisements of Oakland.

Oakland, with an estimated population of 385, 000, is California's fourth largest city. It is the county seat of Alameda County and is the largest manufacturing center in the northern half of the state.

Situated on the Mainland shore of San Francisco Bay and linked to the city of San Francisco by the 8 1/4 mile long San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, it is the terminus of transcontinental railways, a world port, a focal point of the state's freeway system, and a principal gateway for domestic and overseas airline services through its new $20, 000, 000 Metropolitan Oakland International Jet Airport.

The ultra-modern city rises from the shoreline and its 20 miles of docks to the picturesque Contra Costa hills. A great deal of its cultural and recreational life and tourist interest centers on Lake Merritt, a large salt water lake located in its heart and the setting for its Civic Center, Children's Fairyland and other features. A recent addition is a $6 million dollar museum center featuring a design developed by a competi- tion of the world's leading architects. Another addition to the recreational and cultural assets is the $25.5 million dollar, 49, 000 seat, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Inc. rising in the vicinity of the Oakland Air- port.

As a world port, Oakland ranks among the leaders in the nation. As the principal city of one of the na- tion's fastest growing industrial centers, it is the scene of manufacturing and assembling activities in the automotive, electrical, glass, machinery, chemical and many other fields.

Historically, it was founded as a "squatter" settlement on a Spanish Grant in 1850, was chartered as a town in 1852 and made the county seat in 1874, Numerous world famous literary figures had their roots in Oak- land including Jack London, who roamed the waterfront at the turn of the century, Joaquin Miller, Bret Harte, Robert Louis Stevenson, and many others.
