TRANSPORTATION- The Metropolitan Oakland Area is the terminus for the Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, and Santa Fe (Richmond) railroads. Inland waterways and ocean freight service is provided by the Port of Oakland (see Port of Oakland). Air service is provided by leading carriers including American, TWA, United, Pacific, PSA, West Coast, Western and SFO helicopter at Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. Also headquarters for chartered lines including World Airways, Trans International Airlines and Saturn Air- ways. The jet terminal is located 12 minutes from downtown Oakland. Airport limousine service also provi- ded to Berkeley, Jack London Square, and downtown San Francisco by Airportransit service. Bus service by A/C Transit to all points in Oakland and surrounding communities. City and area serviced by Greyhound, Continental Trailways, Peerless Stages, and Gray Line tours.

INDUSTRIAL SITES: - (A) There are 3,900 acres in the city limits zoned for light and heavy industry; 150 acres are vacant and available in parcels ranging in size from 0.50 to 30 acres. In addition there are 1, 000 acres in the Port of Oakland Industrial Park with about 130 acres available and ready for use. Also Acorn Redevelopment Project 32 acres. Typical sales prices range from $35, 000 to $80, 000 per acre. The terrain is flat. Drainage is good for most of the area. Subsoil is medium textured and alluvial and piling is required in isolated cases.

RETAIL TRADE AREAS- Consist of a network of downtown districts and outlying shopping centers. Retail sales are $700 million for the City of Oakland and exceed one and three quarters billion dollars for Alameda County.

CIVIC DEVELOPMENT- The Kaiser Center, an Oakland landmark located on the west side of Lake Merritt, is the headquarters for the organization's 96-nation-wide and foreign plants. This largest office building west of Chicago represents $47, 000, 000 investment. New public buildings include 42 million dollar State office building; 11 million dollar Hall of Justice; a 42 million dollar County Administration building; 22 million dollar County parking garage and rooftop heliport; 5-story Alameda County Health Building and $2,100, 000 Welfare Building, and a multi-million dollar probation building.

PARKS AND RECREATION- Lake Merritt, 160-acre body of salt water (only tidal salt water lake in heart of an American city) located in the center of Oakland, surrounded by Lakeside Park, a recreational center including CHILDREN'S FAIRYLAND, PERALTA PLAYLAND, a Natural Science Center, Federal duck refuge, picnic area, Japanese, Begonia, Dahlia and Chrysanthemum Gardens, bandstand for summer concerts. FAIRYLAND is an animated Mother Goose storybook land, scaled to size of children with sixty fanciful sets, taken from children's literature. PERALTA PLAYLAND, a children's amusement park with scaled down steam-driven streamliner, Bulgy the Whale, other rides and play area. The City maintains 70 school play- grounds, 65 parks with an area of 1400 acres, 20 recreation centers, 32 municipal playgrounds, 29 tot lots, family and children's camps in the Feather River Country and Calaveras County, 4 day camps, and a year- round supervised recreational program in parks and school facilities. 16, 000 acres of Regional Parks in the East Bay maintained as semi-wildwood areas providing recreation areas for all age groups such as outdoor swimming, hiking, riding, motorcycle trails, archery and rifle ranges, golf courses, tennis courts, picnic and children's playgrounds, overnight camping for youth groups. Two State Parks situated in the region, Knowland State Arboretum and Park, home of the Oakland Zoo, 98th Avenue and MacArthur Freeway and Alameda State Beach Park in nearby city of Alameda. Jack London Square, and Marina, recreational and restaurant area; beautiful year-round Morcom Amphitheater of Roses.
