Three Major Departments

The three major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of San Francisco, arranged in alpha- betical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, like- wise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a great metropolis and port city like San Francisco, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of San Francisco, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, fol- lowed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are ar- ranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of tele- phone numbers.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Direc- tory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of San Francisco.

Form of Government-The City and County of San Francisco is a municipal corporation known as San Francisco. San Francisco has a consolidated city and county government, with legislative powers vested in a board of supervisors of 11 members, 5 and 6 being elected every 2 years for four-year terms. The mayor, treasurer, assessor, city attorney, public defender, district attorney, sheriff, and superior and municipal court judges are elected by the people for terms of 4 years. The chief administrative officer is appointed by the mayor and has permanent tenure. The controller is appointed by the mayor, subject to confirmation by the board of super- visors, and has permanent tenure.

Population-1950 U. S. Census, 775,357; estimate on Jan. 1, 1959, 821,000. Predominating nationalities of foreign-born residents: Italian, German, Irish and Canadian.

Area-44.82 square miles (land).

Altitude Sea Level to 933.6 feet city datum.

Climate-Average temperature, 56.5 degrees F. Daily mean maximum, 62.6 degrees F. Daily mean minimum, 50.4 degrees F.

Recreation-127 public recreation and park units covering 4,043 acres, or about one-eighth of the available land area.

Assessed Valuation-$2,003,866,924, all property, in- cluding $65,344,723 veteran and welfare exemptions. $7.55 tax rate (1958-59) includes $0.017 levied by Rapid Transit District, but collected by City.

Trade-Territory (retail) includes 3,444,300 people (1958) within the 9-county area covering San Francisco Bay. Metropolitan Area jobbers can serve over 6,203,200 people in northern California. Many firms distribute to the 11 Western states, as San Francisco is Western head- quarters for hundreds of companies with regional and national distribution.

Hotels-521, with total of 45,136 guest rooms, third highest in nation.

Transportation-Converging in San Francisco are 4 Class I railroads operating more than 27,000 miles of line. There are numerous trade routes served by the steamships calling at San Francisco. More than 250 air and marine lines maintain offices or agencies in the city, thus linking San Francisco with at least 300 of the world's ports. There are over 100 common-carrier truck lines and several transcontinental bus services. San Francisco is the major air terminal of the Pacific and accommodates a constantly-increasing flow of air traffic to and from all parts of the nation and the world. Daily scheduled services for passengers, mail, express and freight are available. San Francisco Airport reported 3,596,023 pas- sengers off and on during 1958.

Amusements-More than 100 theatres. Largest audi- torium in city seats about 12,000 persons.

Hospitals-30.

Education-124 public schools, including 14 junior high and 7 senior high schools. There also are many parochial and diocesan schools. Number of pupils in daily attendance at public schools, 95,601; in private schools, 29,308 (1958).

Public Libraries-734,691 volumes.

City Statistics-Storage in water supply system, 170,512,759,000 gallons (June 30, 1957). Municipal per- sonnel, 20,350; police department personnel, 1,805; fire department personnel, 1,778; school personnel, 3,790 certificated and 1,545 non-certificated.

SITUATION

San Francisco, "City by the Golden Gate", whose City Hall is situated at 37 degrees 47 minutes north

latitude and 122 degrees 25 minutes west longitude-on a hilly peninsula with altitudes ranging from sea level to 933.6 feet U. S. Base, is bounded on three sides by water. Of a total of 93.1 square miles, only 44.82 are land. It is among the few world cities with the distinction of having more than half of its entire area washed daily by the ocean's tidal currents.
