INTRODUCTORY
This is the first edition of the San Jose and Santa Clara County Directory, published by the Polk-Husted Directory Company. It is not. however, a new business to this firm, for the Polk-Husted Di- rectory Company is an affiliation of two of the oldest directory pub- lishing huses in California and in the United States. R. L. Polk & Company have been publshing City and County and State Di- rectories in California for nearly thirty years. Mr. F. M. Husted has been publishing directories in this State for some twenty odd years, and the two firms have now joined forces, making one of the strongest Directory companies in America, greatly to the benefit of California.
The information for this publication has been gathered by a personal canvass from house to house-all the dwellings, from the palace to the hovel, and to all the offices, stores, factories and every nook and corner of San Jose and all of the villages in the County.
The work of gathering and compiling this data has been done by men who make a business of this line of work, all of them having had the same experience in other cities and villiages, sufficient to make each and every one of them thoroughly qualified for the work. The old saying, "Every man to his trade," applies with full force to Directory making, for there is nothing more intricate and complicated ; in no line of business is experience more necessary ; new men make a sad failure of gathering names and data for a directory.
The experience of the past years devoted exclusively to Directory making has been used to excellent advantage in the compilation and publication of the San Jose and Santa Clara County Directory, and it is confidently believed that this publication will elevate the standard of Directories in California, and it will be found the equal, if not the superior, of any similar publication in America.
The Directory is a necessity in modern, business and social life; every one is represented in it. No publication has a more general every one is represented and interested in it. No publication has a more general or more extended use, and each succeeding year has found the Directory more popular and important. It is used all the while by all the people, at all seasons of the year, not only by the residents of the County, but by those who come from beyond the County limits, and by those who consult the Directory libraries, where are contained the Directories of all the principal cities and States. These libraries will be found generally throughout the large cities of

this country, and residents of New York, San Francisco, New Orleans and Alaska may find information concerning San Jose and everything in Santa Clara County as easily as those who live within the city limits The publishers maintain offices generally throughout the Unit- ed States ; it is their intention to provide all their offices with copies of these directories and to apply them to every Directory Library in the United States, which will make a very valuable advertisement for Santa Clara County.
POPULATION.
It is quite an important matter to know whether the city is grow- ing or decreasing. It is like the merchant's annual trial balance; it shows exactly the political and business condition and the future pros- pects for the people of the community.
Nothing in life remains stationary ; everything goes forward or backward. If the community grows, success, prosperity and happiness will follow ; if it does not grow, it will decrease in population and all the elements of hard times will be present. It is, therefore, a matter of vital importance that a proper census be taken at frequent intervals, and the Directory canvass affords infinitely the best method, and the statistics which the Directory presents to the people annually are fully recognized and appreciated by the Government of the United States, which spends annually millions of dollars for the same class of informa- tion, for it shows clearly and definitely the actual condition of the city and the county, the people and their institutions, and sug- gests what the future may bring forth.
The San Jose portion of this Directory, contains 23,128 names, which multiplied by 2 1-2, the figure which is generally found to accur- ately represent the names of women and children who are not included in the directory canvass, represents a population of 57,820.
The publishers take pleasure in returning thanks for the patronage bestowed upon this publication, and assurance is hereby given that the work will appear promptly hereafter at regular periods, and that each succeeding will be better than the one before.
