gained since 1900, 25,000 population and the city and county are rapidly forging ahead. It is that steady, continual growth founded upon stability that is particularly sought after by capital, realiz- ing that their investments will not fluctuate, but have a continued increase in valuation.

The citizens of San Jose have been laboring und : the impres- sion that we have but 40,000 population, but according to the P: Ik- Husted Directory Company, they have 23,128 names in San Jose and the immediate adjoining districts, which are virtually a part and tributary to San Jose, and are separated only by a imaginary line.

The national adopted method by directory comparte, to secure the total population from the number of names printed in the directory is to multiply the number of names secured by two and one-half, which makes the total population for San Jose and im- mediate adjoining districts 57,820. This rule has proved reliable in every instance, and San Jose is no exception.

San Jose is a modern city. It is justly termed the "Garden City of California." It is strictly up-to-date in all of its ap- pointments and has ample hotel accommodations to handle the throngs of visitors who constantly flock to this city and valley. For a convention city it is unsurpassed. for we now have ample space in our auditorium with seating capacity sufficient to handle the largest conventions. San Jose is the county seat of Santa Clara County, is beautifully located in the heart of the famous Santa Clara Valley, with mountains rising on either side to an ele- vation of over 4.000 feet. To the east the foothills rise gradually, one oval hill piling over the other until in the distance Mt. Hamil- ton looms up as a sentinel guarding the busy, peaceful city and val- ley. To the west the Santa Cruz range rises to an elevation of 4,000 feet, with Loma Prieta in the distance. The hills in the Santa Cruz range rise more abruptly than in the eastern range, and over the ridge on the west side may be found the famous California big trees "Sequoia Sempervirens", which are noted for their state- liness and height as well as diameter.

For railroad facilities no city could be better located. We have fifty trains daily in and out leading into every section of California, and we are now a railroad terminal point, receiving the same con- sideration in passenger and freight rates as the largest city in the state. From San Jose is shipped annually millions of tons of fruit to all parts of the globe and last year 6.660 carloads of fruit alone were shipped from this city. It is a cosmopolitan center built on beautiful lines with magnificent buildings .a delightful climate, pure mountain water and an abundance of it.

The electric urban and interurban cars furnish pleasant trips to all parts of the valley, while stages run daily to Lick Observa- tory, on Mount Hamilton, 4,209 feet above sea level, 28 miles from San Jose, over the best mountain roads ever built (cost $87,000). One of the outdoor features is a trip to Alum Rock Park, a city reservation of a thousand acres, where sixteen mineral springs each with its curative properties are flowing free to the public for the taking and here one may fully enjoy the pleasure of an outdoor life.

Another attractive trip is by the interurban electric line to Con- gress Springs, where one may walk amid the cool shades of dense growth of trees and shrubbery, wild as nature can provide and through all this a veritable lovers' lane winds its way. At the end of this lane may be found the soda springs bubbling and effer zes . cing with nature's chemicals free to the public. Other attractions are as follows :

Old Mission at Santa Clara. Reached by street car from San Jose. Built in 1777. Very interesting.

was established, the University of the Pacific, and in addition a number of private institutions of learning.

The city is beautifully decorated with shade trees and palms, and there are miles of well graded streets and cement sidewalks. Our public buildings, notably, the Carnegie Library, City Hall, County Court House and Hall of Justice, including our church buildings of every denomination, and bank buildings, are attractive edifices and worthy of note. We have ample amusements in theatres and otherwise so that never a dull moment may be spent in this city. Throughout the county the roads are excellent. We have more than 300 miles of roads which are sprinkled during the summer months and a total of 962 miles of public roads. The following statistics of Santa Clara County may prove of interest to the stranger within our midst or to the residents who may wish to forward this informa- tion : Area of Santa Clara County, 1,355 square miles or 867,209 acres ; number of farms, 23,456; number of acres assessed, 727,905; value of country real estate, $21,126,465; of improvemerts thereon. $7,386,625; of city and town lots, $13,060,810; of improvements thereon, $8,354,995; of personal property, $4,655,880; total value of all property, $57,479,365; road levy per one hundred dollars, 40 cents ; value of county buildings, $958.050. We have in the county 6,501,952 fruit trees and in table and wine grapes we have 6,053 acres planted to grapes. Of the fruit trees there are over 53,000 acres alone planted to prunes, and 7,000 acres planted to seeds. We have the largest seed farms in the world. The total production of the county is $27,129,812. This production is new money made out of the soil or from manufactured products made in the manufactories of the county.

In addition to the attractions presented in San Jose one is in close touch with many smaller cities and towns cach with its distinctive attraction and all located within Santa Clara County, within easy reach of San Jose, either by rail or electric road. Each city is named in alphaetical order and its features described in this volume.

Visitors planning a trip to San Jose and Santa Clara Valley should bring their automobiles. All roads are open to automobiles and the city is supplied with garages well equipped for repairs and supplies. We have seven garages and one manufacturing plant. which turns out a high grade machine.

Those not interested in motoring will find ample and reasona- ble livery accommodations for trips throughout the valley.
