BERKELEY. -

This picturesquely located town is known throughout the State as the site of the California University, and the home of many institutions of learning, which have given it a dis- tinctive character. It is advantageously located on rolling land, and commands a pleasant and comprehensive view of the Bay of San Francisco and the Golden Gate, and is much sought for as a place of residence by those whose inclina- tions lead toward a quiet and educational suburb. It is growing rapidly, real estate being held at reasonable rates and offered on easy terms of payment.

MANUFACTORIES.

Its manufacturing interest, are represented by the Stand- ard Soap Company, and the Acid and Powder Works.

During the past year the Presbyterian Church has erected a handsome church edifice, and a new public school building has been completed. Improvements during the past year have been of a substantial character, and mark the result of a healthful and permanent growth.
