B'NAI B'RITHE HALL ASSOCIATION. Organized to build and maintain a suitable hail for the order, and to rent lodge rooms. The fine structure for such purposes at 121 Eddy street was designed and erected by the Association. It contains, besides a fine library, an excellent dancing hail and well-appointed dining rooms. INDEPENDENT ORDER OF FORESTERS.


The special object of this Order is to furnish insurance-ranging in amount from $500 to $5,000-to its members at low but fixed rates, varying according to age. The amount insured for is payable at death, or in case the member be totally disabled by sickness or accident, one-half is then paid to himself person- ally, and he receives a paid-up certificate for the re- mafning one-half, paid to his beneficiary at his death. Each member of the Order is also entitled-to free medical attendance, by the Court Physician, when- ever he may require such attendance, and by the payment of a small sum monthly he is entitled to a sick benefit of from $3.00 to $5.00 per week, and a funeral benefit of $50.00 at death. The Order is man- aged by the Supreme Court, with headquarters at Toronto, Ont. The High Court of California was instituted April 11, 1890, and is located at Los An- geles. A loyal, patriotic organization, fraternal and bene- ficial, strictly non-partisan and non-sectarian. San Francisco office. 214 Pine street. Objects of the order: To maintain and promote the interests of Americans, and shield them from the depressing effects of foreign competition, assist Americans in obtaining employment, encourage Americans in business, establish a siek and funeral fund, maintain the public schools of the United States of America, and to prevent sectarian interference therewith and uphold the reading of the Holy Bible therein. Qualifications for membership-A white male per- son. born in the United States of North America, or under the protection of its flag. Of good moral character. A believer in the existence of a Supreme Being as the Creator and Preserver of the Universe. Opposed to union of church and State. Favorable to free education and the American public school sys- tem. Between 16 and 50 years of age for beneficial membership; over 50 years, non-beneficial member- ship.


The word "Junior" in the title has no relation to the age of members. It was adopted to distinguish the order from the O. U. A. M., and has no other significance.


Nor is the word "Mechanic" to he construed literally. It refers in no manner to artisans, but embraces every pursuit.

NATIONAL UNION, THE.


A distinctively American, secret, benefielal order, organized and incorporated under the laws of Ohio, May, 1881.


It was formed to associate white male American citizens of good moral character, of sound bodily health, and between twenty and fifty-four years of age.


To advanee its members morally, socially and in- telleetually.


To provide for the relief of sick and distressed members and their families.


To provide a benefit fund, from which, upon the ·death of a member, a sum not exceeding five thou- sand dollars shall be paid to sueh beneficiaries re- lated to the deceased member by consanguinity or affinity, as may have been designated by the mem- ber, in accordance with the laws of the order.


Certifieates are issued in amounts of $1,000, $2,000, $3,000, 84,000 or $5,000.


Councils of the order are established in eities and towns of the healthy portions of the United States and Canada, there being now over 780 Couneils in existence, with number of members, Jannary 1, 1897, 50,000.

ORDER OF CHOSEN FRIENDS.


The Order of Chosen Friends is a fraternal, benevo- Ient and protective society. Its business is eon- ducted privately, yet in such a mauner that those conscientiously opposed to secret societies can en- dorse and affiliate with it. It was established May 28, 1879, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and now has about 900 Councils and about 40,000 members, 180 Councils and 8,000 members of which are in the Grand Jurisdie- tion of California. It is the ouly fraternal insurance order that pays, in addition to death benefits, the full amount of their insurance to its members arriv- Ing at the age of seventy-five years, and not less than one-fourth nor more than one-half the amount to those who become totally disabled by reason of sickness or accident. Certificates are issued in sums of $500 to $3,000.
