of a school in connection therewith. Incorporated July, 1889. Affiliated with the University of California February, 1893, and at the same time entered into possession of the property it now occu- pies under the terms of an agreement whereby the owner, Mr. Edward F. Sear- les, deeded the building and grounds to the Regents of the University for the exclusive uses and purposes of instruc- tion in and illustration of the fine arts, music and literature, or any of them, including the maintenance of galleries and reading rooms and other suitable means of such instruction and illustra- tion, under the title of "the Mark Hop- kins Institute of Art." The buildings of the Mark Hopkins Institute were de- stroyed in the great fire which devast- ated the city in 1906, and a new agree- ment was entered into with the Regents of the University and Mr. Searles under which the Art Association retained pos- session of the former site and erected thereon a temporary building wherein are displayed such pictures and statues as were saved from the fire, together with subsequent additions to the collec- tion; in this building also is conducted the School of Design, the whole being comprehended under the title of The San Francisco Institute of Art. The present building is the precursor of a more elaborate one which it is the in- tention to erect in the future. Mean- time the Association is enlarging its collection which is on permanent exhibi- tion, while special exhibitions are held at frequent intervals. Meets fourth Tuesday in each month. Henry Heyman, secretary; J. R. Martin, assistant secre- tary; director, Capt. R. H. Fletcher.

The California School of Design, main- tained by the Association, teaches draw- ing, painting and modeling in all their branches, decorative and constructive designing and wood carving.
