THE UNITED ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS.
The Order is perhaps the oldest. His- tory speaks of it as an Order of Priests and learned men among the ancient Celts -the race of people who left the parent hive in Asia at a very early period and settled in western Europe. For many centuries preceding the Christian era and at the time of the invasion of the Ro- mans, the Druids was the most promi- nent and powerful order; they presided over the religious celebrations, and were the judges, legislators, philosophers, phy- sicians and instructors of their people. The order first assumed its present char- acter in England in the year 1771, and was introduced into America in the year 1830. It is a moral, social and beneficial society. Its principles and teachings are derived from ancient Druidism and are founded on reason and sound morality; they do not conflict with any religious system and are perfectly compatible with the laws of any civilized country. In becoming Druids, members are still free men. It is a secret society simply for the protection against abuse of its beneficial provisions.
The order is firmly established in all countries inhabited by the Caucasian race, and is the only order that has an International Grand Lodge which meets in quinquennial session.
Its objects are: To unite men (irre- spective of nation, tongue or creed) for mutual protection, to cultivate social vir- tues, to encourage in business, to assist in obtaining employment, to foster among its members the spirit of fraternity and good fellowship, and by a well-regulated system of dues, provide for the relief of sick and destitute members, the burial of the dead, and the protection of widows and orphans.
