THE UNITED ANCIENT ORDER OF

DRUIDS.

The Order is perhaps the oldest. History speaks of it as an Order of Priests and learned men among the ancient Celts-the race of people who left the parent hive in Asia at a very early period and settled in western Europe. For many centuries preceding the Christian era and at the time of the invasion of the Romans, the Druids was the most prominent and power- ful order; they presided over the religious cele- brations, and were the judges, legislators,

philosophers, physicians and instructors of their people. The order first assumed its present charter in England in the year 1771, and was introduced into America in the year 1830. It is a moral, social and beneficial society. Its

principles and teachings are derived from an- cient Druidism and are founded on reason and sound morality; they do not conflict with any religious system and are perfectly compatible with the laws of any civilized country. In be- coming Druids, members are still free men. It is a secret society simply for the protection against abuse of its beneficial provisions.

The order is firmly established in all countries inhabited by the Caucasian race, and is the only order that has an International Grand Lodge which meets in quinquennial session.

Its objects are; To unite men (irrespective of nation, tongue or creed) for mutual protec- tion, to cultivate social virtues, to encourage in business, to assist in obtaining employment, to foster among its members the spirit of fraternity and good fellowship, and by a well-regulated system of dues, provide for the relief of sick and destitute members, the burial of the dead, and the protection of widows and orphans.

According to the method adopted in this city for numbering buildings, Market Street is the starting point for numbers on all streets running from it in a northerly, southerly or westerly direction, and the water front for all streets running therefrom in a westerly or southwesterly direction. The numbers on all streets not commencing at Market Street or the water front run in conformity with the numbers of the main streets running parallel with them, except in the case of a few streets which are numbered in an irregular manner.
