On July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and Wash- ington's Birthday the building is closed.


The Free Library was first opened to the public on the evening of November 7, 1878, with about four thousand volumes on its shelves. It has steadily gained in popular favor, having 8,252 members on the library roll. July 1, 1898, it was shown to possess 27,512 volumes.


Provision has been made for filing and indexing for reference all pamphlets, leaflets and printed papers of local interest, also programmes of public occasions and other documents and contributions to current history of the City of Oakland as may be of use in forming the basis of a local historical collection, and citizens having such papers, programmes and documents are requested to donate the same to the li- brary.


The Central Reading Room, 64-66 San Pablo avenue, ha's on file all the principal newspapers published on the Pacific Coast, together with the most prominent journals and mag- azines of the East, also standard English magazines and periodicals. Open from 8 a. m. to 10 p. m. Sundays, 9 a. m. to 10 p. m.
