PLACES OF INTEREST AND GENERAL INFORMA. TION.

The beautiful City of Alameda is situated upon the eastern shore of the Bay of San Francisco about six miles distant front the City of San Francisco. The peninsula is formed a great deal like a human foot-print and is nearly surrounded by the waters of the bay and its tributaries. From shore to shore, and inside the city limits, are 2,220 acres of land. The soil is rich dark loan ?. and flowers and trees planted, grow to perfection. The entire city is dotted with wide spreading oaks which tend to give it the appearance of an old park, the site of hundreds of beautiful and costly residences. There are about fifty miles of macadamized streets, the walk or ride through which unfolds to the visitor a thousand charms. It is pre- eminently a city of homes, of green trees, of flowers, of women and children, of domestic and social life. It is a city of schools, and free from lawlessness. It is a city to which good people with families are attracted, to whichi they are at once attached, and from which they go with regret and with the hope of a speedy return.

There are two steam railways extending the entire length of the city, with 14 stations, zig-zagged, as it were on both. Over these lines are run 63 trains each day from San Francisco and the single fare is ten cents. Commutation or monthly tickets. $3. These trains connect with boats that leave San Francisco on the quarter and the half hour daily. From the hour of 10 o'clock a. m. on week days to 3 p. m. the broad gauge boats leave San Francisco on the hour; Sundays every half hour all day.

The water and the climatic conditions are the most favor - able for bathing, boating and fishing, evidence of which may be observed daily in the surf at the beach and by the elegant boat houses built on the shore, notably the Encinal Yacht Club's hoine on the bay shore and the Alameda Boat Club's rendezvous on the estuary side.

The sewers of the city are unexcelled by any in the world. None larger than eight inches and they are flushed twice every day by the rise and fall of the tide and between tides by auto- matic flush tanks.

This city is the "cyclers' paradise" and it is said that any vehicle will last five times as long here as elsewhere. The high- est point is 29 feet above tide water and the lowest point is I; above it, consequently there are no grades. but long, tree lined. level avenues.

The water is freshly pumped from artesian wells, is clear and healthful, and is sold at the rate of 30 cents per 1000 gallons.

The gas supplied is of good quality and cheap; for lighting it is supplied for $1.50 per 1000 cubic feet, and for heating $1.25 per 1000 cubic feet.

Fruit and farm produce is sold direct to the consumer from the producer and is thus fresh and at a reasonable figure.

An electric road with cars under small headway and under good management, runs through the city and through Oakland, thus forming a loop and it is well patronized.

One might enumerate and keep on for days expatiating and enlarging on the beauties and advantages of a residence here, but by reference to the next page one may see a general sum- ming up of the many points of advantage of a residence on the "Encinal de Alameda."

FOOD AND MILK INSPECTION.

In November, 1893, the Board of Health of the City of Ala- meda took up the matter of food and milk inspection by prepar- ing and ordinance which the Board of Trustees passed Novem- ber 13th, 1893, entitled, "An Ordinance Authorizing the Inspec- tion of Food and Milk and Prohibiting Any Person From Selling, Offering for Sale or Distributing Any Impure. Unwholesome or Adulterated Milk, Cream or Food, or Resisting the Inspection, Seizure and Destruction of the Same," which ordinance laid the foundation for a thorough inspection of all food stuffs, milk and its products, and all dairies supplying milk in the city. Since the passage of this ordinance the city has employed a competent, duly qualified Veterinary Surgeon to conduct a systematic in- spection of all grocer, butcher, baker and produce shops, also all dairies supplying milk and the cows thereat, and a monthly report is issued as to the sanitary condition, food stuffs fed the cows. per centage of butter fat and cream of each individual dairy. This report is posted on a blackboard in the rooms of the Board of Health where it remains from one month to another.

Adjoining the Board of Health rooms is a well equipped laboratory for the purpose of testing milk or other food stuff. There is also connected with the Health Department an official Bacteriologist who makes microscopic examinations of contag- ious diseases, milk and food.
