Keys of the signal boxes are deposited in the vicin- ity of each box, at such places as are indicated upon cards placed thereon.

The signal boxes in use consist of thirty-one crank boxes and one hundred and fifty-six automatic boxes. An alarm from an automatic box is given by pulling down the hook once and letting go, unerring mechan- ism doing the rest.

Complaints concerning the working of the Fire Alarm Telegraph, irregular striking of the bells and gongs, broken wires, etc .. should in all cases be made at the Fire Alarm Office, Brenham Place.

In case of tumult or riot, whereby the services of the Police force are required, an alarm will be given, consisting of ten strokes upon the bells and gongs, repeated five times, which will be a signal for the Po- lice to assemble at the old City Hall. This alarm will be given only by order of the Mayor or Chief of Police.

The telegraph apparatus consists of about one hun- dred and forty-four miles of wire, divided into twenty- one circuits, of which thirteen are signal circuits, or circuits running to the signal boxes. Alarm gongs are located in the different Engine, Hook and Ladder, and Hose houses, each connected with the Central Office by the fire alarm circuits and eight alarm bells for striking the alarm box, located as follows: One on the Hall of the Exempt Fire Co., one on the Engine House on Sixth street, one on the Engine House on Stockton street, one on the Engine House on Second street, one on the Engine House on California street, one on the Engine House on Sixteenth atreet, one on the Engine House on Bryant street, and one on the Engine House on Pa- cific street. The bells and gongs are each struck at the same time by electrical machinery.

Fire Department.

The Paid Fire Department of the City and County of San Francisco was organized December 3, 1866.

The present force consists of three hundred and thirty officers aud men (including the Board of Eu- gineers, the Clerk and Messenger of the Board of Fire Commissioners, the Veterinary Surgeon, and employ- ees at the Corporation Yard), fifteen steamers, to each of which is attached & hose reel, eight hose carriages, and four hook and ladder trucks; also six steamers, four hose reels, and one hook and ladder truck in reserve at the Cor- poration Yard, the condition of which is as fully kept up to the standard required as that of the apparatus in active service. Each steamer and hook and ladder truck is drawn by two horses, and the hose carriages by one each. Number of horses in the Department, eighty. Amount of hose in use twenty-eight thousand feet, all of which is carbolized.

Fire Patrol.

Established in May, 1875, by the Board of Fire Un- derwriters. It is conducted on the saine principle as the one in successful operation in New York City. The apparatus consists of wagons carrying rubber covers, fire extinguishers, ladders, and other appli- ances for extinguishing fires, saving life, and protect- ing property from damage by water. The force con- sists of fifteen men, including the Captain, who are on duty day and night. There are two stations, No. 1, located southwest corner of Stevenson and Ecker streets, and No. 2, northeast corner of Eddy and Polk streets. Telegraph wires extend from Station No. 1 to the office of the American District Telegraph Co., and also to the Palace and Grand Hotels.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1886, there were 63 schools, employing 734 teachers, and having an enrolled attendance of 43,140 pupils, of whom 22,551 were boys, and 20,280 girls. By the report of the School Census Marshal, June 30, 1886, the number of youth in the city between five and seventeen who are entitled to draw school money is 74,079, an increase of 5,079 for the year. The number attending school (private and church schools inclusive) during the year (not including Chinese) was 58,088, an increase during the year of 6,079. The number between five and seventeen years of age (not including Chinese) who have not attended school at any time during the year was 15,858, & decrease from the preceding year of 1,133. The enrollment at the different schools W88 as follows : High schools-Boys, 276; girls, 910 ; total, 1,186. Grammar schools-Boys, 7,424; girls, 7,769 ; total, 16,193. Primary schools-Boys, 12,679; girls, 11,332; total, 24,011. The financial condition of the Department is represented as follows : The city tax for school purposes in the year 1885-86 was .1136 cents on each $100. The total income was $816,- 174 89. The expenditures were $815,778 14. The amount paid teachers' salaries, $680,613 65.

EVENING SCHOOLS .- Number of pupils enrolled during the year 2,532. Average daily attendance, 1,014 ; average number belonging to Evening Schools, 1,156. The terms and holidays are the same as those of the day schools. The studies are reading, arithme- tic, penmanship andcomposition or letter-writing, bookkeeping, industrial drawing, mathematics, etc. There are two Spanish classes which receive lessons alternate evenings, from two teschers appointed for that purpose. The total number of classes now in the schools are twenty-eight. The Evening Schools are held at the Lincoln, Mission, Haight and Wash- ington Schools.

SCHOOL HOUSES .- The total number of build- ings used by the Department is 62, of which 58 are owned by the city and 4 rented. Of those owned by the Department, + are of brick and 64 are of wood. The amount paid for rented rooms was $6,185.

Colleges and Private Schools.

Notwithstanding the excellence of the free public schools of the city and State, their exemption from direct cost to the pupil or parent, and the great in- terest taken in them by the public as the nurse and strength of our free institutions, colleges and private schools of great wealth, popularity and importance rise and prosper. That such institutions exist, shows the great interest taken in educational matters. The public and private systems are rivals, each stimulst- ing the other, and setting examples of enterprise, management, salaries, edifices, progress and standard of scholarships. There are in San Francisco over one hundred private schools, in which term are in- cluded the select school of s few pupils, the semina- ries, commercial schools, scademies, convent schools, and colleges, with their thousand students. The Census Marshal reported the number of youth at- tending private and church schools in this city in June, 1886 (not including Chinese) st 9,164. Many of the private schools having edifices of great capacity, cost and grand architectural sppesrance.
