Elsinore.
Population 1,000.
Spring or summer, fall or winter, Elsinore is a pleasant resort. It is 1,280 feet above the sea, and combines the cli- mate and health of all the famous resorts of Southern California in one. The daily mean temperature is 71 degrees. The town of Elsinore is situated on the line of the California Southern Railroad, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, nes- tled in an alcove at the foot of a rugged mountain. To add to the beauty and attractiveness of the town, Lake Elsinore, a beautiful sheet of water, and the only lake in Southern Cali- fornia, spreads out before it a distance of seven miles in length and three miles wide. The surrounding country is rich in minerals and in agricultural resources. The prevailing soil is the light sandy and gravelly loam, of a dark chocolate color, pronounced the very best for fruits, vineyards and decidu- ous trees. Around the head of the lake is some moist and semi-moist land of dark rich mould, which produces abun- dantly. The Lake Colony has been estalished there for three years, and they have made wonderful strides in developing the resources of the valley, and in beautifying the town during this time. As a summer resort it has become deservedly pop- ular. The attractions, aside from the pure atmosphere and delightful climate, embraces many worthy of mention. The lake is encircled by a magnificent drive of sixteen miles, and forms the most pleasing feature of the town for visitors and residents. "Lady Elisore," a small steamer, with accommo- dations for seventy-five passengers, twenty-five sail-boats, two catamarands, and four large yachts, are constantly flitting about upon the placid waters and furnish a constant round of pleasure.
The sounding of this body of water shows 300 feet, and it is fed by the San Jacinto river, giving the purest and best of

water for domestic purposes. There are numerous mines in the neighboring hills, where gold, silver, tin and asbestos are found. Fire-clay of the finest and best quality is found in abundance near the town. The pottery made from this clay is pronounced superior to the Akron, Ohio, or Peoria, Illinois, wares. A fine body of coal is now being mined from the adjoining hills, near the farming lands of Elsinore. The vein is from four to seven feet thick.
The Hot Springs of Elsinore have become notorious for their curative qualities. They are called the "Carlsbad Springs" on account of their properties being so nearly similar to the celebrated springs at Carlsbad, Germany. The town of El- sinore is situated near these hot springs, which makes it con- venient for invalids. Various testimonials have been volun- tariły given to the public by persons who have found relief from the use of these waters.
There are untold beauties in and aronnd Elsinore which never fail to attract the eyes of visitors and call forth excla- mations of wonder and surprise. An avenue ten miles in length, bordered on either side with beautiful shade trees, ex- tends from the town to Riverside street. It is called Grand avenue, and is one of the most beautiful drives in the State. From the shores of this lake and from this avenue the per- spective is grand. To the west is seen the gray peak of "Old Baldy," eastward of this the Cajon Pass, where the A. T. & S. Fé enters the valley; still further east, the towering form of San Bernardino, and directly eastward, the San Jacinto Peak, whose show-capped summit furnishes the pure water of Lake Elsinore.
This beautiful . town, which has grown as if by magic, without the aid of brass bands and orators; merely by its own intrinsic worth, aided by the attractive lake and rich soil, can boast of some very costly and handsome residences, hotels and

business blocks. The business men are all doing well, and contented with the present outlook, believing as they have every reason to believe, that Elsinore will be a city of no mean proportions at no distant day. It has two very fine churches, and an excellent public school, and with its wonderful hot springs it is bound to become a popular resort for people from all parts of Southern California.
To add to the attractiveness and the pleasure of Elsinore the enterprising citizens have secured the building of an elec- tric railroad to encompass the lake-a distance of sixteen miles-thirteen of which has been put under contract. The balance will be contracted for just as soon as the right-of-way can be obtained and subscriptions secured to complete it. The Enos system has been adopted, and it will afford rapid transit, with ease and comfort to passengers, pleasure seekers and travelers generally. They hope by next Christmas to have the road completed. They also propose, in connection with the system to light the town with electric lights.
The large square in the center of the town, which takes in the springs, has been converted into a handsome park, which has been adorned with trees, flowers, grass plots and fountains, and bath buildings of the most approved style have been erected, fitted up with porcelain bath-tubs, plunge and swimming baths, hot baths, cold baths and mud baths-every- thing that can be jound at any of the famous old mineral springs resorts of the country.
The building up of manufacturing establishments has al- ready commenced. Sewer pipe. water pipe and terra cotta cotta works, which will cover five acres of ground, are now be- ing built, and work will be commeneed in a few days on a nail factory, which will be the largest on this Coast, with the ex- ception of the famous Judson Nail Works at Oakland.
