UNITED ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS

The order is perhaps the oldest. History speaks of it as an Order of Priests and learned men among the ancient Celts-the race of people who left the parent hive in Asia at a very early period and settled in western Europe. For many centuries preceding the Christian era and at the time of the inva- sion of the Romans, the Druids was the most prominent and powerful order; they presided over the religious celebrations and were the judges, legislators, philosophers, physicians and instructors of their people. The order first assumed its present charter in England in the year 1771, and was intro- duced into America in the year 1830. It is a moral, social and beneficial society. Its principles and teachings are derived from ancient Druidism and are founded on reason and sound morality; they do not conflict with any religious system and are perfectly compatible with the laws of any civilized country. In becoming Druids, members are still free men. It is a secret society simply for the protection against abuse of its bene-

ficial provisions. The order is firmly estab- lished in all countries inhabited by the Cau- casian race, and is the only order that has an International Grand Lodge which meets in quinquennial session. Its objects are: To unite men (irrespective of nation, tongue or creed) for mutual protection, to cultivate social virtues, to encourage in business, to assist in obtaining employment, to foster among its members the spirit of fraternity and good-fellowship, and by a well-regulated system of dues provide for the relief of sick and destitute members, the burial of the dead and the protection of widows and orphans.
