EDUCATION
Berkeley is provided with a complete public school system, housed in safe, substantial buildings. Here are located, also, several divinity and parochial schools, a number of excellent preparatory schools, and a number of high ranking institutions devoted to commercial study.
The elementary schools are carefully designed to take full advantage of inspiring scenery and invigorating sunshine and are provided with adequate playground space. These institutions serve not alone as places of instruction but also house much of the neighborhood community life.
Located in the heart of the city on a campus of great natural beauty, the University of California, largest of American Universities, is famed for the brilliance of its teachers and the quality of its instruc- tion. Enrollment on the Berkeley Campus exceeds fifteen thousand.
TRANSPORTATION
Berkeley has been chosen as a place of residence by many persons because of its location at the focal point of the transportation facilities offered by the San Francisco Bay Area. Two transcontinental railroads, a metropolitan street railway and bus system, transbay interurban electric lines, two trans- continental highways, and excellent approaches to the San Francisco Bay Bridge insure adequate trans- portation to Berkeley residents at all times. Complete facilities for travel by air and water are but a short distance away.
The great San Francisco Bay Bridge links together colorful, busy San Francisco and the thriving metropolitan empire on the eastern shores of the Bay. The East Shore Highway leads directly from Berkeley to the Bay Bridge and only a few short minutes separate Berkeley from San Francisco.
PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS
For the resident, Berkeley is a city filled with recreational opportunities-fishing, tennis, golf, hik- ing, horseback riding, delightful short motor trips, spectator sports at the University, a fine Aquatic Park, a spacious Yacht Harbor, a 1900 acre Regional Park, playgrounds, picnic areas, - all of these are available at home.
The 1900 acre Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park is destined to be one of the West's great com- munity playgrounds and is devoted to nature, hiking, picnics, riding, and contains a championship golf course. It lies adjacent to Berkeley and in it one may enjoy pleasures of outdoor life and the beauties of nature, all within a stone's throw of the city.
On the Berkeley bayshore is the largest man-made yacht harbor in America, representing an invest- ment of more than a million dollars, modern and complete, and providing berths and mooring space
15
for almost a thousand small craft. Near by is Berkeley's Aquatic Park, which in years to come will be one of the beauty spots of California. A mile-long lagoon surrounded by a landscaped park, brings opportunity for rowing, canoeing, motorboating, model yacht sailing and seashore picnics.
SHOPPING
Over eleven hundred retail outlets, conveniently located to serve every section of the city, pro- vide residents of Berkeley with complete stocks of goods displayed in modern, efficient establish- ments. There are many neighborhood trading centers with modern shops, designed to fill the needs of the most discriminating shopper. Berkeley stores are convenient, accessible and provide for every taste and purse.
INDUSTRY
Berkeley's industrial area is well located with respect to the residential districts. It includes within its confines more than 142 plants each of which produce goods in excess of five thousand dollars value yearly. A number of the establishments are branches of large national concerns while others, large in operations, are locally controlled. There are several score of smaller industries all of whom con- tribute to the city's annual payroll. Berkeley's industrial income exceeds thirty million dollars a year.
CITY GOVERNMENT
The City of Berkeley has operated since 1923 under the Council-Manager form of government. lts municipal government has been frequently rated by experts as among the first two or three city governments in the United States from the standpoint of service to the people and general efficiency. It has repeatedly won distinction among the cities of the nation for the excellence of its police and fire departments and for its annual report of operations.
Fundamental to the success of the government in Berkeley has been the clear separation between legislative and policy making functions, which are the responsibilities of the council, and the adminis- trative and executive functions, for which the City Manager is responsible. The manager carries out the will of the council without interference after that body has arrived at decisions. The result has been economy of operation with entire elimination of politics in the commonly accepted term of the word.

ALAMEDA: A city of homes and industries, of culture and education, located on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, having an area of 10.76 square miles, with a population of 40,000.
GOVERNMENT: City manager form of government administered by a city manager and a legislative body consisting of five Council members, the president of which is the mayor.
RECREATIONAL: Five beautiful parks conveniently located, equipped with modern apparatus and supervised by competent playground directors ; as well as the nationally known Neptune Beach Park with its huge salt water tank and many forms of amusement; miles of sunbathed, sandy municipal beaches, and private outdoor swimming facilities, provide all forms of diversion for both old and young. Boating in the peaceful waters of the San Francisco Bay and San Leandro Bay, is enjoyed by yachting and motor boat enthusiasts throughout the seasons, while the Annual Regatta and Water Sports Carni- val brings deserved fame to Alameda. Bass and other salt water game fish attract fishermen and lovers of this sport to the environs.
FLOWERS: Lovers of flowers and gardening may in the rich sandy soil of Alameda, produce the choicest of blooms. There are several floral societies and the annual Flower Festival attracts great throngs of enthusiastic admirers.
EDUCATIONAL: In the belief that children are entitled to a well rounded education, ten public schools including a modern High School, which was erected at a cost in excess of a million and a half dollars, are maintained and these together with the State University at Berkeley and the famed Mills College in Oakland, both in close proximity to Alameda, offer everything in the field of education.
PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS: Alameda is now the west base of operations for this international system of over 32,000 miles of airways. World trade routes linking many foreign countries are now augmented by the Trans-Pacific Aerial Route from Alameda to the Orient and a huge trade relation between the Orient and the mainland is growing, as well as mail and passenger service via the gigantic Clipper Ships.
GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES: On Government Island, located in the Estuary separating Ala- meda from Oakland, sixteen modern buildings house the Federal Department of Coast Guard, Bureau of Public Roads and Western Division of Forestry. In west Alameda comprising the site of the Alameda Airport and the former Benton Field, with additional area amounting to some 2,000 acres, is the loca- tion of the Naval Air Station on which the Navy expects to base their seaplanes. This gigantic $15,000,- 000 development is to be under construction at an early date.
LIGHT: The municipally owned Electric Light Plant distributing all light and power to the com- munity, was established in 1887 and has been successfully operated, producing a source of revenue that contributes largely to the low city tax rate.
WATER: Alameda receives its water supply from the East Bay Municipal Utility District through the people's Mokelumne River Mountain water project and distributing system, which assures consum- ers of an ample supply of pure water at a minimum cost.
INDUSTRIES: Careful zoning of industrial lands which has preserved a large acreage, adequately served by rail and water, permits location of large enterprises desiring to establish themselves in the great metropolitan Bay Area. Already many large nationally known industries are located in Ala- meda, and with an ambitious construction program that will reflect itself in industrial development not surpassed by any community, Alameda's future is assured.
ENCINAL TERMINALS: Encinal Terminals, located on the Estuary separating Alameda and Oakland, has terminal warehouse space of 300,000 sq. ft., with berthing space for five large ocean- going vessels, and service as to steamers including Coastal, Intercoastal and Foreign, as well as San Fran- cisco Bay and River Carriers, with routes to all ports. By means of the Alameda Belt Line, connection is had with transcontinental systems: Southern Pacific, Western Pacific and Santa Fe. Complete truck service extends to nearly all interior California points. Specialized service in any detail of all types of freight shipments is afforded, including pool car and storage services.
The Alameda Chamber of Commerce is prepared to furnish information and statistical data of all character, and earnestly invites inquiries.
