Mississippi township is situated in the northeastern corner of the county, being entirely north of the American river. It is bounded on the north by Placer county, on the cast and south by the American river, and on the west by the range line between Ranges 6 and 7 cast. A part of the southern half of this township is on the San Juan grant, and the other portion is high rolling land, and has been successfully mined up to quite recently Mississippi Bar, and others, lying on the American river, about eighteen miles above the city, yielded handsomely to the miner, and for several years were points of attraction.
No. 15-Latham's Store, or Ashland-is the only election precinct in, the township, which cast thirty-four votes at the Presidential election 1868. Grant Electors received 22; Seymour, 12. For Congress-Sar- gent, 22; Coffroth, 12.

Natoma Township.
Natoma is bounded on the north and east by El Dorado county, on the south by Cosumnes township, on the west by Granite township. By United States survey, it may be described as being bounded north and east by El Dorado county, on the south by township line between town- ships 8 and 9 north, and the west by range line between ranges 7 and 8 east. The town of Mormon Island is in the northern part of this town- ship, and is one of the oldest mining towns in the State.
The Mormons set claim to having first discovered gold in California, and that they did so, at Mormon Island. Daniel Webster in a speech before the Senate referred to this matter; however, the credit of the discovery has been given to parties at Coloma, in El Dorado county, then known as Sutter's Mill. At all events, gold was discovered in the sands of the island in the American, afterward known as Mormon Island, at quite an early period of California gold mines-and the mines proved to be remarkably rich. They are now probably worked out, or nearly so.
There are two election precincts in this township, Mormon Island is the only Post Office. Justice of the Peace-Thomas Stephenson.
Mormon Island-Election District No. 17-Fifty-six votes were cast. Grant electors received 43; Seymour, 13. For Congress-Sargent, 43 ; Coffroth, 13.
