FACTS ABOUT SAN DIEGO

Prepared by Publicity Bureau SAN DIEGO-CALIFORNIA CLUB

With a deep-water harbor unexcelled anywhere, a superb setting on a series of terraces rising gently from bay-shore to foothills, affording an outlook over a wide sweep of marine and mountain scenery, and with a notably mild and equable climate, San Diego possesses natural advant- ages that appeal at once to all classes of home-seekers as well as to those who are in search of industrial and commercial opportunities.

Along the edge of the bay and on the adjacent heights has been built a city-potentially a great metropolis-whose architecture and many other attractive features enhance to the utmost the distinctive charm of its environment. Viewed from bay or ocean the city and the landscape beyond form an harmoniously colorful and inspiring picture framed by the distant Incopah range to the north and east and the mountains of Mexico to the south.

San Diego is the seat of government of San Diego county and is sixteen miles north of the Mexican border. The municipal limits em- brace an area of 78 square miles, including thousands of acres of pueblo lands owned by the city.

With commendable foresight the founders of modern San Diego, taking advantage of favorable conditions, provided it with wide streets and boulevards, thus to obviate the possibility of congestion, and their example has been followed in the laying out of new subdivisions.

The last report of the city auditor shows municipal assets of $40,- 379,593, including lands, improvements and utilities as follows: Water impounding and distributing" system, $8,591,819; sewer system, $3,- 262,135; improved streets, and bridges and conduits, $9,535,580; fire- fighting equipment, $502,770; public library and branches, $332,368; park and plaza system, $7,162,400; playgrounds, $272,000; harbor lands and equipment, $3,772,000; municipal farm and unimproved pueblo lands, $752,828.

The total assessed valuation of privately-owned property within the city limits is considerably more than $100,000,000.

Embracing an area of 22 square miles, San Diego harbor is of suf- ficient size to accommodate the sea-borne commerce of an empire. It is completely land-locked and the depth of water at its entrance is 35 feet at low tide. A systematic plan adopted by the harbor commission assures its development as a thoroughly modern port. Present harbor facilities include piers and wharves with a total berthage space of 10,330 feet.

In addition to 1320 acres of city-owned tidelands, there is available for future industrial needs more than 800 acres of water frontage pur- chased by popular subscription and held in trust by the Industrial Lands Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, to be sold at cost, plus a small percentage to pay expenses of administration, to manufacturers and others seeking sites for new enterprises. This tract includes fine sites for railway and marine terminals.

The strategic position of San Diego as the first American port north of the Panama canal and the general suitability of its harbor, influenced the government to select it as headquarters of the Eleventh Naval Dis- trict. In the development of the naval base more than $20,000,000 al-

San Diego is the home port of more than 150 naval vessels, includ- ing eighty-four ships, principally destroyers, that are out of commission and tied up at the destroyer base. Disbursements of the Eleventh Naval District in payrolls and for maintenance are approximately $2,000,000 a month.

The area of San Diego county is about 2,700,000 acres, but as the eastern part is mountainous not more than 500,000 acres are suitable for agricultural purposes. However, the mountainous districts constitute a valuable asset not only as a wonderfully scenic recreation area but as the source of an inexhaustible supply of water for domestic and irri- gation purposes. The western part of the county is divided into a series of irregular plateaus or terraces. The lower, or coast terraces, practi- cally frostless, comprise a number of valleys with intervening mesa lands. Next comes a series of higher valleys varying in elevation from 400 to 1500 feet. In the third series is included the foothill districts, with numerous small valleys, nooks and glens from 2500 to 4000 feet above sea level.

Of great importance to any city is the question of transportation. In this respect San Diego is especially well situated, being the western terminus of two transcontinental railroads, the Santa Fe and the San Diego & Arizona lines. The Santa Fe has been long established in this territory, with facilities commensurate with its immense system. Its handsome station in San Diego, built after the mission style, is one of the finest in the West.

By way of the San Diego & Arizona Railway, which was com- pleted December 1, 1919, San Diego is several hours nearer the eastern markets than any other coast city. This road runs along the water front for some distance and then turns eastward, crossing the rugged Incopah range by way of Carriso gorge, which is famous for the grandeur of its scenery. It taps the rich Imperial valley, giving that wonderfully pro- ductive region a direct outlet to tidewater, and connects with the main line of the Southern Pacific at Yuma.

San Diego county has many hundreds of miles of boulevards and roads and is connected with Los Angeles by the coast and inland routes. A fine scenic highway built and maintained by the state and much of which is paved, accommodates travel between San Diego and the Im- perial Valley.
